And Sunmi’s new single album, STRANGER, did just that. It’s been living in our heads rent-free since its release. Sunmi is a musical genius and an artist in every sense of the word, and this release proves it more than ever as she takes the horror concept to a whole new level!
‘Calm Myself’
Sunmi opens her single album with ‘Calm myself’ as an intro track. The song might be about one minute and a half long, but it’s enough to create a clear image of what she wants to express in STRANGER. ‘Calm myself’ feels creepy yet has immaculate pop melodies. And that one minute and 30 seconds is enough to give us an absolute masterpiece.

But of course, the star of the show is ‘STRANGER,’ the title track. This song goes in so many different ways and never ceases to surprise us – even after all the times we’ve listened to it. ‘STRANGER’ is deranged and unsettling in the best way possible. Sunmi created a track that showcases all the sides of her musicality and amazing voice. With captivating and creepy verses, adding a genuinely addictive pre-chorus that deserves to be called a masterpiece on its own, ‘STRANGER’ takes us into a truly unexpected chorus. It’s one of her most unique songs, and no one could pull it off quite like her. You don’t even need to watch the music video to know this is a horror song, that’s how good it is.
Yet ‘STRANGER’ does hit even more when watching the music video. It takes the horror, unsettling, creepy feeling of strangeness to another level. Sunmi has always been amazing at giving us insane music videos, but ‘STRANGER’ has to go down as her best one yet. The atmosphere she manages to create is really something special and horrific. She didn’t take the horror concept lightly at all. Taking inspiration from Frankestein, the music video for ‘STRANGER’ explores the idea of identity and the stranger being a part of you. We cannot emphasize enough how much the music video for ‘STRANGER’ is a must-watch.
‘Call my name’
If you’re like us and love some of Sunmi’s deeper cuts like ‘Childhood,’ ‘Call my name’ is the song for you. It still has that same creepy energy as the rest of the release but in a much more chill and laid-back way. ‘Call my name’ is a perfect song for the fall season, with her soft vocals and a captivating melody we could never get tired of.
Sunmi has yet again outdone herself, proving what a horror concept in K-Pop can be with ‘STRANGER.’ With the release of one of her most unique songs yet, Sunmi showcases how much of an artistic genius she is. And we continue to be obsessed with everything that she touches.
