Attention! To everyone still getting over your last four-year relationship (or four-month relationship, we don’t judge): Fletcher’s ‘Eras of Us’ is for you! Bonus points if you allowed yourself to reminisce after running into your ex at the Eras Tour.
Fletcher got those bonus points. As a result, she’s revisiting all of her own eras, and she couldn’t have done that without referencing a few of them. Since we were going to be listening to this song on repeat anyway (and watching the music video), we figured we would find all the easter eggs so that you didn’t have to.
‘Wasted Youth’
“Girl of my dreams, forever we’re young.” We’ve been on quite the journey with Fletcher over the years, but we haven’t forgotten her first time writing about being young and in love. Years after ‘Wasted Youth,’ being in love still makes Fletcher feel young and carefree.
‘Undrunk’ / ‘Feel’
“I didn’t mean it when I said I was numb, ’cause I’m feelin’ every feelin’ cuttin’ straight to my guts.” We feel this one, and it cuts deep. Deeper when we consider that feeling the pain of a breakup is a theme that Fletcher has revisited a few times. So far, we’ve caught her numb to physical pain in ‘Undrunk,’ and trying to numb emotional pain in ‘Feel.’ What can we say, we guess she lied…
‘f*ck you for ruining new york city for me’
“I’m New York City, you were L.A.” We all know the history Fletcher has with New York City. It was the first place she fell in love, and you know… she has a whole EP about it. We can’t help but feel like the ‘Eras of Us’ music video could double as a video for ‘f*ck you for ruining new york city for me.’ She walks around the city (Paris, not New York, but still) and can’t escape the reminders of her ex. We just hope L.A. isn’t ruined for her now.
‘Sex (With My Ex)’
“Say goodbye forever, until next time.” Who knew the next time would be at the Eras Tour? If you remember the S(EX) TAPES era, you know Fletcher lives for the drama. To refresh your memory, the entire EP and the accompanying music videos were recorded and shot by her ex. So it’s easy to believe Fletcher never thought she’d see her again. We’ve never recorded an EP with our ex, but can’t imagine it would be easy. On that note, a breakup song about reminiscing on the good times seems like healthy growth. Right?
‘Better Version’
“We crashed just as quick as we burned, now someone new get a turn.” Someone new getting a turn is a concept that Fletcher has thought about before, which means we’ve had to think about it. ‘Better Version’ talks all about helping your ex to be a better version of themselves, and seeing someone else reap the rewards. Is still brutal, even a year later.
‘Guess We Lied…’
“You got a new life in just six seasons. I only know you in bits and pieces.” Somehow, referring to years as seasons makes Fletcher’s songs more dramatic. And it seems like she knows it, as she’s now done it in ‘Guess We Lied…’ and ‘Eras of Us.’ During ‘Guess We Lied…,’ she was stuck in the era where she watched her ex move on without her. In ‘Eras of Us,’ she is forced to remember that she doesn’t know her ex anymore, and it hurts.
‘Girl of My Dreams’
This one is the most obvious. We caught this reference embarrassingly quickly, as Girl of My Dreams (2022), Fletcher’s debut album, was on repeat after its release (long after… you should see our Spotify Wrapped.) It was not only a goodbye to her relationship with her ex, but also a reference to a newfound self-love. Not that it wasn’t a good idea to write this article, but now we’re thinking about how Fletcher wrote an entire album about the girl of her dreams (Herself? Her ex?), and now tells us that she “f*cked it up.” Ouch.
We hope that you’re in agreement with us that Fletcher is a genius for referencing so many of her old songs in ‘Eras of Us.’ But she’s also a genius for every other detail in the song.
