Interview: Rosie Darling Brightens Our Day With The Release Of Lanterns

rosie darling interview

It’s time to find the light. Rosie Darling has us covered. With the release of Lanterns, Rosie Darling has proved that she’s a shining star. Gorgeous visuals and stunning aesthetics go hand in hand with her tales of love, forgiveness, and moving on. In our exclusive interview with Rosie Darling, we weren’t kept in the dark any longer as we learned all about her influences, motivations, and more about Lanterns.

First and foremost, congratulations on the release of Lanterns. If we had to describe it in two words, we’d call it a magical journey. What two words would you use?
Wow! Thank you. It definitely was magical to create, but also painful! If I had to describe it in two words, I’d pick “haunting” and “freeing.” Lots of emotions were wrapped up in these songs, and writing helped me unpack a lot of that over the months, if not years, that went into writing it.

Growing up, who were some of your musical influences? Do you feel you’ve incorporated any of that inspiration into your songwriting?
Yes! I was also a huge fan of Taylor Swift, for sure. She inspired me to learn how to play guitar and piano as a kid, and I have definitely tried to capture her lyrical style from some of her earlier songs in my own!

Your lyrics are so powerful we’re sure many of our readers will be able to relate. As a singer and songwriter, how does it feel to express such vulnerable emotions through music? How do you hope to reach your audience through your lyrics?
It feels scary! I love that people relate and find their own meaning, but I sometimes write these songs from a place of my own struggles or emotions, and so it’s as validating for me as it is for the audience when I listen back and hear everyone’s individual connection to the song. It feels like a safe space between my audience and me, like we understand each other, and there’s no judgment!

‘I’m Different Now’

When possible, embracing the ups and downs and remembering that everything has a season can be comforting, at least it is for me!

One of our favorite lyrics is, “I know the hurt is part of healing,” which is so true. What piece of advice do you have for your fans who may be in need of some healing themselves?
I think reminding yourself that everything has a season. I’m only now finding out some hard truths about life as a twenty-something-year-old, and part of that is realizing that life is not meant to be easy.

In the spirit of ‘I’m Different Now,’ how do you feel you’ve grown as an artist since you first began making music?
Honestly, I think I care a lot less about what people think of my lyrics. I like diving into the super detailed and specific scenes that are described in my songs instead of shying away from them. It’s a way for me to feel seen and to share an experience. I think this album has a lot of those detailed lyrics, and I feel like there is a world that I’m creating when writing.

You collaborated with Boy In Space for ‘Nail In The Coffin.’ How did this collaboration come about? What was it like working together?
I have always been such a fan of his! I reached out asking him if he wanted to work on something together, and so we hopped on a Zoom call and ended up writing one of my favorite songs on the album!

He is so talented, lyrically and melodically. I’ve always gravitated towards his music and lyrics, so having him on this project is so special to me.

Another song that spoke to us (and made us reach for the tissues) was ‘The Longest Goodbye.’ and how it speaks to the difficulties that can come with moving on in a relationship. How do you find the motivation to move forward, even when things are difficult?
I think you just have to literally keep moving. It’s SO hard, and the processing is endless. Relationships are so complex, and I wouldn’t say I’m an expert at all, but I have found that every small step counts.

The Lanterns visualizers take place in nature. How do you feel they speak to the album’s tone? How did you come up with your ideas for each?
I have to give credit to the one and only Emily Dickinson! I absolutely love her quote, “I’m out with lanterns, looking for myself,” and I wanted to capture that! I find nature to be healing like many people all over the world, and I want my songs to feel comforting and like a safe place to feel your feelings through music, so to me, being in nature was the only way!

The entire album is absolutely breathtaking. However, we’d like to know if there’s one song on this album that you love the most.
I feel like it changes every day; however, ‘Boxes’ is special to me because it’s the first song I began writing after a really difficult time in my personal life.

It felt good to get it off my chest and I wrote that one for myself, without even thinking about whether or not my fans would like it or not. Releasing it felt like giving my side of the story and it gave me some peace.
