Exclusive Interview: Sophie Powers Is Gonna Be Better Than Ever In 2024!

Haven’t heard the name Sophie Powers? This year you will (and that’s a promise!) One of the coolest artists we’ve met to date, Sophie has a style all her own. Talented and trailblazing only begin to describe her; we couldn’t put it all into words. Luckily, she can! Check out Sophie’s plans for the upcoming year, her unique fashion, and how she deals with the haters in our exclusive interview!

Thank you for taking the time to talk to us here at the Honey POP. We’re excited to have you! For our readers to get to know you, if you had to describe yourself in just one sentence, what would it be?
I’m excited to be here! I’d say I’m kind, compassionate, artistic, and extremely driven.

You knew you wanted to be a musician early in life. Where do you feel your passion for music came from? Who were some of your early inspirations?
My passion for music has been there ever since I can remember. When I was little, I attempted the violin and piano before sticking to the guitar. Music camps playing guitar in a band in the summer were my favorite camp experiences growing up. However, musical theatre and singing lessons/the school choir all really helped nurture my passion for singing.  My father’s family is very musical, as he was a musician himself. He was always playing music 24/7. Classical, rock, grunge, and reggae would be blasting in his office at all times. I don’t think I could walk through the front door without hearing music playing in my house. That definitely supported my passion for music as well. It was part of my environment.

You’ve worked with and opened for some incredible artists. What is one lesson you learned early in your career that you’ve taken with you as you continue on in your musical journey?
I learned to never take anything for granted. I sometimes forget to enjoy the journey instead of the destination, which I know sounds cliché, but it’s true. I’ve opened for some of my favorite bands/ artists and manifested amazing things. If I forget to be thankful for that, then what’s it all for?

We always have to include one silly question. In your song, ‘Nosebleed,’ you have the line, “Hope the aliens come and get me with their ray guns. ‘Cause I don’t feel like I belong here.” Do you believe in aliens? If yes, how would you convince the non-believers?
Haha, I love this question. Yes, I definitely do believe in aliens. My advice to any non-believers, look at the CIA’s public case files regarding aliens and UFOs. You will find yourself questioning reality.

‘Better On Mute’

I honestly have to say that if people hate you, you’re doing something right. Change makers cause disruption and upset a lot of people by doing so. Trust yourself and use the hate as motivation to spark more change.

Sophie Powers on facing “the haters”

One line of yours that hits hard is, “Say you wanna be a star. I don’t think you’re built for this life.” because a lot of us can relate to that feeling of self-doubt. What do you do on those bad days to keep yourself motivated towards your goals?
I definitely have had my fair share of days with self-doubt, and to be honest- I’m too stubborn to let the self-doubt engulf me.  But the best thing you can do is allow yourself to feel doubtful and insecure because being confident all the time can sometimes feel impossible. But let those moments pass, and stay focused on the bigger picture. Single thoughts don’t define you, but an accumulation of thoughts do

With a lot of us on social media these days, we often see a lot of negativity. How do you use your platform in a positive way?
I try to showcase my art and express myself through social media in hopes that I can encourage someone else to express themselves even a little bit more. Despite the hate, I keep going, and I think other people should see that. Not letting negativity get to you is the first step to spreading positivity.

Social media can also lead to comparisons to others or attempts to fit in. However, you’ve maintained a very unique personal style. How would you describe your aesthetic?
I used to dress very conventionally, but it was killing my inner artist. Now I over-express myself to compensate for all those years of suppressing my true style and self. I’d say my aesthetic is very inspired by the art I consume via TV, fashion, games, nature, and whatever environment I’m in. Anime, cyber-futuristic interior design, manga illustrations, and steampunk/Harajuku and grunge fashion subcultures have heavily inspired my style and aesthetic. I just want to look/dress like a video game character or comic book superhero haha.

As you continue to grow as an artist, where do you hope to see yourself and your career in 2024?
I see myself expanding more globally and touring Europe and Asia. I also am looking forward to dropping an EP and collaborating with some artists in genres I haven’t explored yet! Headline shows for sure as well.

We know our THP readers will love you and your work as much as we do! What projects do you have coming up that they should be on the lookout for?
I’ll be dropping my EP in late spring. Headline shows with more international tour dates are also on the books for 2024 for me!! It’s going to be a huge year.

To ring in the new year, Sophie Powers released a remix of ‘Better On Mute’ featuring Chandler Leighton. You’ll wanna have the volume all the way up for this one!
