UMI is back with the latest EP, Talking To The Wind, and there is so much wonder to unpack. The newest project is a journey through the maze of life that invites us to embrace the beauty of being lost. The four-track EP marks a new milestone as UMI’s first independent release, showcasing her artistic growth and confidence. Lately, UMI has been all the rave, especially with her previous comforting single, ‘wherever u r,’ featuring V of BTS. But now, it’s time to unpack her latest project and everything we know you’ll adore about Talking To The Wind.
Track 1: ‘why dont we go’
The EP kicks off with the energetic song ‘why don’t we go,’ where UMI navigates through funky melodies to explore the human experience. The song itself is a celebration of youth and beauty. Plus, it perfectly sets the tone for the entire EP. In particular, the change of pace in the second verse adds a playful touch to the delicate chorus we can’t get enough of. Released as a previous single, it quickly became a fan favorite and built anticipation for the songs to follow.
Track 2: ‘happy im’
This soul-soothing track is filled with beautiful harmonies and sweet lyrics. Born to an African American father and Japanese mother, UMI adds her heritage into the song by singing portions in Japanese. This adds such a unique layer to the track, making it even more special. And the message of accepting the happiness we often run away from is inspiring. UMI reminds us to “think less, love more” and that “life is meant to be sweet.”
Track 3: ‘not necessarily’
Diving deeper into the complexity of life, ‘not necessarily’ explores the story of being hesitant in relationships and the compromises made for love. The soulful R&B sound enhances the raw emotions UMI sings about, creating that rollercoaster of emotions we love in a song. The exploration of balancing your life while making compromises for love has left us in deep thought. However, one thing we know for sure is that this song is on an instant replay.
Track 4: ‘SHOW ME OUT’
The final track of the EP, ‘SHOW ME OUT,’ truly captures the theme of romance and authenticity of Talking To The Wind perfectly. The music video is set in a colorful loft full of nostalgic trinkets and is self-directed by UMI herself. This only highlights her artistic vision and creativity, proving she’s on to great things. Again, she inspires us by demonstrating that all you need is a phone and ideas to create something truly great, in this case, the ‘SHOW ME OUT’ music video.
Like us, you’re probably eager to experience UMI’s new EP live. So mark those calendars because UMI has announced shows in Sydney and Melbourne in March of 2024. We’re hopeful the tour will extend across the world.
