3 Of Our Favorite Collabs On Calvin Harris’ Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2

Calvin Harris has done it again and brought us the perfect summer album with Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2! ICYMI, the first volume came out in 2017 and included bops like ‘Feels’ with Big Sean, Katy Perry, and Pharrell Williams. You already know he brought even more mind-blowing collabs with this new installment! Get your playlists ready, because you’ll be adding most of this album to all of them once you hear it.

This album is for car journeys, and beaches, and things like this. What I was doing a lot was taking trips to the mountains. This is when I still lived in LA. Taking a trip out to this place called Idyllwild in the car, listening to a lot of psychedelic rock and then climbing the mountain, literally and figuratively, and then heading back. So I was doing a lot of that, putting a lot of vinyl, getting to that kind of zone, you know?

Let’s get into the zone of Funk Wav Bounces and take a look at some of our favorite moments on the album!

‘Stay With Me’ Featuring Halsey, Justin Timberlake, & Pharrell

We’ve already expressed our love for ‘Stay With Me,’ but we’ll express it again because one time just isn’t enough to convey how much we adore it. This star-studded collab is definitely going down as one of our songs of the summer! And after so many years of pumping out hits like this, we think Calvin‘s going down as a creative mastermind who has a gift for picking just the right collaborators.

Getting Pharrell, and Justin Timberlake, and Halsey on a song felt amazing to me, and like such an amazing experience.

‘Obsessed’ Featuring Charlie Puth & Shenseea

‘Obsessed’ perfectly captures what it’s like to have a seemingly unrequited crush on someone, which makes sense since this is now one of the songs we have the biggest metaphorical crush on. Between Charlie‘s deeper vocals than usual and Shenseea‘s standout energy, it’s a natural inclusion on this list and our playlists!

I wanted to take a lot of the auto-tune off his voice. I didn’t want him to sound necessarily like how he does in his records. When you’re Charlie Puth, you can do anything. So I think there’s a shepherding that needs to happen sometimes with people that are just so… Talented. that you need to kind of go, “Well, what about this?” Or, “Try this. It’s okay to sing like this.” Or, “It’s okay to do it like this.” And I think once I kind of gave him permission to do that, he went with it and he was amazing at it. And then the Shenseea element was more, like… It kind of reminded me of those 90s hip-hop tunes that were kind of commercial, and they had a disco sample, and then it would be, like, Lil Kim on it or something like that. And because that beat is kind of like that, and Shenseea was someone that I really wanted to work with, I was like, “Well, this surely would work.” And it did because she’s brilliant.

‘Somebody Else’ Featuring Jorja Smith & Lil Durk

Bringing the coolest slick R&B vibes, ‘Somebody Else’ intertwines Jorja Smith‘s magical vocals with Lil Durk‘s clever lyrics and, of course, Calvin‘s bouncy production skills. This is the ultimate jam for late nights when you’re sitting by the pool or having a chill bonfire with friends!

It was actually surprising, initially, to me that [Jorja] wanted to work. Like, that she was receptive to that. Because the persona I feel like that she puts out is a little bit, for me, a little bit standoffish. So I was like, “Well maybe she… She’s probably not up for it.” And she was so up for it. And not only was she up for it, she was very sort of excited and happy to do it. And the song turned out amazingly, I think.
