Rachel Platten Bears Her Soul In ‘Mercy’

If the stunning cover art didn’t catch your attention, I’m sure the name Rachel Platten did. The songwriter spares no mercy with her stunning vocals, and she has hit the nail on the head once again with her newest release, ‘Mercy.’

If we could look that gorgeous and play the piano that perfectly, we’d be set for life. Rachel’s powerhouse vocals take our breath away, especially in the beautiful candle-lit setting. Our flaming love for Rachel will never burn out ❤️‍🔥. Rachel explains the moment that caused her to sit down at the piano and begin writing this song,

“I wrote ‘Mercy’ alone in my studio in the middle of the night, during the darkest part of a very painful battle with my mental health. I ran to my piano and banged on the lower register and let out a guttural cry, ‘oooh mercy,’ I can’t take anymore, please stop this pain,”

Verse 1

Verse 1 opens strong and hits us right in the gut

“There’s dirt in my nails/From scraping the walls/And I thought I hit bottom/So why am I still falling?/I know who I am/I didn’t forget/But I just need relief/And I won’t give up yet”

From school to work to everyday life, we can relate to hitting rock bottom and feeling like a failure. It’s important to never give up and use the time at the bottom to reach new heights.

Chorus

“But God, this is all feeling so hard/Why am I lost out in the dark?/And why am I struggling just to keep standing?/Tears won’t stop coming and I don’t understand them/Maybe it’s true that I’m getting stronger/But this really hurts me, I’m crying, ooh, mercy/I’m crying, ooh, oh, mercy”

This chorus really stands out to us because Rachel talks about the feeling of weakness when in reality you are growing stronger. Sometimes it’s hard to feel strong in the worst of worst situations. As Rachel reminds us, it is okay to cry and feel all the feels!

“The darkness felt so big, but this almost joyful music was coming out of my voice and piano keys. The chords were triumphant, the wail of ‘oh mercy’ was so wounded and yet so raw and soulful, like the rock and roll I grew up loving: Janis Joplin, Elvis, Susan Tedeschi and Sheryl Crow were with me that night as I channeled this answer to my pain. It came all at once, so fast that I had to try to catch the words as they spilled out of me.”

Verse 2

“I’m too hard on myself/I never let myself fail/But then my body screams help/And my mind wants to bail/I just wanna be real/Stop pretending I’m good/And feel what I feel/Not what I think should”

Being too hard on ourselves is an everyday occurrence. We struggle to find the balance between reaching for success and bending ourselves until we break. Taking the time to connect to things that we love, like Rachel’s music, continues to center us for the better.

If you need a moment to relax and re-center your emotions, listen to Rachel Platten’s ‘Mercy’ ✨. What was your favorite lyric from the song? Let us know in the comments or by buzzing with us on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook 🐝.
