We know what you’re thinking, more bangers from KiNG MALA?! Right after the release of her killer EP SPILT MILK? How lucky are we that she picked her fans to be her Valentine this year and dropped the absolute banger that is ‘hypothetical.’ KiNG said that this was her way of sending the SPILT MILK era off in fashion. A final parting gift, ‘hypothetical’ showcases all of our favorite sides of KiNG MALA’s music.
The music video for the track was also an act of love from KiNG to her fans. It shows interactions, prep, and BTS footage from MALA’s run of shows last fall. There are intimate moments between KiNG and her fans, her crew, and just being her absolutely b*d*ss self on stage. It’s a perfect example of why her fans love her as much as they do!
The fact that this song was written after she finished reading a fantasy novel is so us-coded. We couldn’t even attempt to count how many times we’ve let a story take us to an entirely different universe in our fantasies. And knowing that someone we love as much as love KiNG MALA understands that makes us all warm and fuzzy inside if we’re being honest.
A Valentine’s Day surprise. I wrote this song nearly two years ago after reading a sci-fi novel about alternate universes and thinking, “hmm I bet there are some universes out there where me and [REDACTED] worked out.” I loved the idea of writing a song about every different reality where we ended up together. I definitely have a knack for falling in love with the fantasy of who someone could be in my life, and this song made me realize that the perfect situation is just as likely as the terrible one… and they are both not my actual reality. It is a cathartic therapy session between me and my imagination.

‘hypothetical’ shows a sassy, witty, and sarcastic side to KiNG MALA that makes us feel like we’re giggling in her room at a sleepover while she’s telling us about the delusional the track is all about. Pair that powerful lyricism with her absolutely intoxicating grooves – and you have the masterpiece that is ‘hypothetical.’
