Sad Girl Essentials, Starting with Sasha Alex Sloan’s ‘Highlights’

If you don’t love Sasha Alex Sloan at her worst, you don’t deserve her at her ‘Highlights.’ With the drop of her devastating single, we’re thinking about all the times someone has let their partner stay far longer than they should’ve. ‘Highlights’ is all about someone who only loves Sasha when it’s convenient, and disappears when times get tough. We know all about that, and it’s a relationship that no one should have to go through. But if that’s exactly what you’re going through now, we have the perfect list of songs for you.

‘I should hate you’ by Gracie Abrams

This is the anthem for the girls who give everything to someone who doesn’t give it back. In ‘Highlights,’ Sasha describes a relationship where her partner gives her nothing, she promises that she doesn’t blame them. Gracie manages to capture the same feeling by wondering why she can’t move on even when she was the only one making an effort in the relationship. She was the one calling, driving to their house, consoling them. And yet she remains hopeful to the point of delusion, singing “I would bend back to you if you left the door open.” Love is weird, isn’t it?

‘nobody likes a secret’ by Lizzy McAlpine

If you like ‘Highlights,’ this one is not a suggestion. You need to listen to ‘nobody likes a secret.’ Everything you need to know is in the title, but we’ll go a little deeper. Lizzy describes the aftermath of the type of relationship Sasha is stuck in. She’s watching this person act like they never loved each other when they both know it was deeper than sex.

‘Casual’ by Chappell Roan

‘Casual’ has a similar idea in that she, like Lizzy, and like Sasha, is being kept a secret. Just like in ‘Highlights,’ this person is too worried about what the relationship looks like to their friends. Sasha’s partner only wants to show her off, and Chappell’s partner refuses to do so, claiming that there’s “no attachment” and they’re just casual. By the end, she hates herself for letting it drag on for so long. And yes, get yourself out of this situation. But we think it’s safe to place some of the blame on the other person here.

‘we never even dated’ by Maggie Lindemann

This is for all of you who have had to pretend like there was never anything between you and someone else. Seeing them love someone else the way you wanted them to love you makes it even harder. But true to the themes of this list, Maggie not only has to keep their past a secret, but she admits that she would go back if they just called. All these girls deserve better, and if you relate to these songs, so do you.

‘You’re Losing Me’ by Taylor Swift

Maybe Taylor’s soul-crushing breakup song is the song you need if you’ve been in a relationship where you’re the only one putting in any effort. The sigh at the beginning, her own heartbeat, the cut off of the heartbeat when she says “I can’t find a pulse.” All of it makes us feel like we’re going through the most painful breakup of our lives, no matter what era we’re actually in. We feel like all the women on this list would want to beg their partners like Taylor does at the end of ‘You’re Losing Me:’ “Do something, babe. Say something.”

‘enough for you’ by Olivia Rodrigo

Like we said, they deserve better. But at least in ‘enough for you,’ Olivia is starting to realize this. She’s looking back on all the ways she tried to give her ex everything she thought he wanted. By the end, she understands that no matter what she does, he will never be satisfied. One of our favorite lyrics from Sour has always been “Someday I’ll be everything to somebody else.” That’s the message we need everyone relating to ‘Highlights’ to walk away with. If they only love you at your best, someday you’ll have someone who loves you for everything.

So, we hope we’ve set you up for a good cry if you need it. What would you add to this list? Let us know in the comments or by tweeting us at @thehoneypop!
