Exclusive Interview: Georgia Webster Spills All The Details About ‘Delusional’

Georgia Webster is a name you guys are going to be hearing for a long time! She’s making some of our favorite music right now, and while we’re (not so) patiently waiting for more of that music, we had to chat with Georgia Webster to get all of the details on her newest track ‘Delusional,’ her tour with Kelsea Ballerini, and so much more!

Hi Georgia! Thank you so much for talking with us! To start us off, how would you describe who you are as an artist to anyone who has yet to dive into your music?
Hi! Thanks for talking with ME haha! Hmm, that’s a good question, I would say that I’m a storyteller at heart who grew up on Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, and John Mayer… so songwriting is obviously a huge part of my artistry. I’m from Western Massachusetts and definitely have some small town/country influence but also just make whatever I feel called to make at the moment and feel like my music is pretty genre-less.

‘Delusional’ is helping usher in a new era of your career, what elements of ‘Delusional’ would you say we’re going to see throughout other upcoming projects?
 I’ve loved working with King Henry who produced ‘Delusional’ as well as this whole upcoming project.. he’s been such a fun collaborator and I truly feel like I’ve been able to be 100% myself with him especially when it comes to production and I think that’s noticeable when you listen to these tracks. So definitely expect some more left-of-center production choices and some cool sounds like in ‘Delusional’ for the upcoming stuff as well. 

Upon listening to ‘Delusional’ for the first time it became automatically clear that this was going to be a song we related to all too well, it’s a situation so many of us have been in, and now listening to this track we can in a way, feel less alone in that, did you have those feelings while writing that track? That it was going to be a unifying experience?
 Thank you that’s the best thing to hear! I actually wrote the song with a few of my friend/co-writers Joybeth Taylor, Lydia Vaughn and Austin Goodloe. There was definitely lots of talk about situationships and how much they suck during this session and when I came in with the idea “Delusional” about this situationship breakup I’d been through, everyone was just so down to help me write it. I think a lot of people have been through some sort of non-breakup-breakup and have felt this feeling afterwords of like, “wait was I the one who was reading into things? Was it just me being crazy all along?” So I’m really glad it turned out the way it did and I hope people can find some peace in knowing that they’re not the only ones feeling delusional! Oh, and you’re probably not delusional, by the way.

 When writing a song like ‘Delusional’ which obviously comes from such a personal place, do you automatically see visuals in your head for the music video (which is fantastic by the way)?
Thank you! Luke Rodgers has been doing all my creative and directed the video and shot it all on 8 mm film, which was actually his first time ever doing that which you’d never guess. But yeah usually I always have some sort of basis for what I want the video to be and this time I wanted it to be extra wild, hence the bloody heart and knife. I really just wanted it to show how crazy love can make you feel at times and how in the moment it can feel so real, but then when something happens and it’s over how absolutely insane it can make you feel. 

We can’t talk about this new era without giving some love to ‘Attention!’ When you look at each of the newer tracks do you think there is a thread that ties them together, either in the message or sonically? 
Yeah for sure. I actually didn’t write ‘Attention’- it’s the only song I’ve ever put out that I didn’t write and at first that felt so weird to say… but I’ve been a fan of Emily Weisband, who’s one of the writers on it, for so long. She had helped me write some stuff for the project, which is pretty much all about this one situationship breakup I went through. So she knew what I was going through and how I was feeling and thought I’d relate to ‘Attention’- and she was completely right. It feels like something I would’ve written for this project and fits so well with the other songs and the emotions I was feeling at the time. 

 When you look back at First Goodbye and you look at the artist you were then, what are the noticeable differences you see when looking at the artist you are now?
Oh dang.. well everything on First Goodbye was written by me and only me, and it was all written during my high school years back in Massachusetts. Moving to Nashville has grown my songwriting skills tremendously and I feel like during my First Goodbye era I was really good at channeling my emotions into my music but I still had a lot of learning to do as far as the actual craft goes.. Co-writing has forced me to let go of my ego in a way and hear out other people’s ideas and melodies that I never would’ve come up with on my own. There are songs on this project that I absolutely never would’ve written if it wasn’t for my co-writers. Looking back at my old stuff, I’m super grateful for where it’s led me but I’m also constantly reminded that there’s always room for growth, and I hope I feel that way looking back on this project in a few years!

We would be fools if we didn’t mention our favorite song of yours ‘X’s’ and we wanted to know about the creation of that song, and how its meaning has changed for you over the last few years as audiences have made it their own.
I wrote that song with some of my co-writers when I first moved to Nashville and couldn’t get into any of the bars.. most of my friends were over 21 and I had just went through a big breakup so I was struggling to find my people and just wanted to be able to go out and meet them! I’ve actually been thinking about this a lot but John Mayer said at one of his shows that songs are the only things that can capture a feeling in time, and I relate to that so much with this song. Like I don’t relate to it at all anymore but every time I sing it it brings me back to that time and it’s honestly wild to think about how much I’ve grown since that time, not even just literally and being able to drink but with the community I’ve found in Nashville being here for almost 3 years. It’s such a fun song and obviously I can get into the bars now so it doesn’t hold that same meaning but yeah it definitely brings me back and still holds a really special place in my heart. 

 We of course have to talk about the tour with Kelsea Ballerini, what was one thing that you learned about yourself on the road that you don’t think would have come to know if it weren’t for that environment?
 Well, I learned that I have ADHD!! And I think I probably would’ve come to find that out anyways, but women with ADHD are super under diagnosed so even though I showed like every symptom imaginable growing up I was never diagnosed. When I first got on the road with Kelsea the amount of stimulation was insane- playing radio city music hall as the first show and things like constantly traveling to new places and staying in new hotels every night. My brain completely shut down and I lost my custom in-ears one of the first nights and would forget my guitar somewhere on the daily. Even for someone without ADHD, touring is a lot. But I sort of had this mental breakdown being so overstimulated and I knew it wasn’t normal because I love music and love performing, but it was just so much more stressful than it was fun at first. I ended up getting diagnosed after that first leg of tour and it changed my life. The rest of the tour was amazing and I truly feel like getting on meds and implementing different coping strategies for my ADHD was one of the main reasons I was able to do it!

On the same wavelength of talking about touring with Kelsea, was there something you witnessed in her and how she conducted herself on the tour that you are going to take with you and implement as you embark on the Town Talks Tour? 
It seemed like she totally prioritized herself and her own well-being on that tour as much as she prioritized everyone else, I can’t speak for her but I definitely learned how important self-care is on tour and how much that can affect your performance. Now that I’m starting to do my own headline shows I’m very aware of how I’m taking care of myself and what I’m eating, how much I’m exercising exc. I also allow myself the space to just breathe and be alone as much as I spend time with my band and fans which really helps me stay relaxed and focused.

Thank you guys!! Definitely look out for lots of new music this year, it’s my favorite I’ve ever put out and I’m just really proud of this whole era and the creative surrounding it as well. Also more headline shows!! I’ll be posting more dates soon for those so be sure
