Here at the Honey POP, if we could spend hours dissecting lyrics, we would. And Blair Lee’s LIMBO EP is the perfect chance to do that. She paints such a vivid image with her words, it’s like we’re experiencing it all with her. So allow us to take you through each song.
‘Underdog’ – “Could I pass that tree again, wave hello to all my friends.”
Blair starts off strong by playing on our nostalgia. ‘Underdog’ is all about her childhood, and it almost makes us wish we could go back to when we spent all of our time playing games with friends. And the music video fits the song so perfectly. What says “childhood joy” quite like flying through the wind on a swing set?
‘Fold’ – “I used to think wishes could come true, so every single birthday of my youth, I wished that we could live forever.”
More childhood nostalgia. In ‘Fold,’ Blair attempts to hold onto the things she can’t control. The song sounds like a desperate grasp at something that she feels slipping away. This lyric describes the childlike nature of such a feeling, because we all wished that we could live forever when we were children. Right?
‘Same Place’ – “So what if it don’t kill you? It’s the paper cuts that sting.”
‘Sting’ is a bit different from the other songs on LIMBO. Here, Blair sings about losing her way (quite a devastating topic) but with a fun little tune on top of it. If you know us, you know how much we love those songs. Is it wrong to be dancing to this lyric? If it is, it’s Blair’s fault.
‘Don’t Wanna Leave’ – “Never been so comfortable spilling all the thoughts out of my head.”
The music video for ‘Don’t Wanna Leave’ shows Blair spending a casual night out with friends. She sings so lovingly about her friends, we feel like we know them. We wouldn’t want to leave, either!
‘Bergamot’ – “I wish I knew you sooner. I wish I was your person forever.”
This is a simple line but packs so much into it. Again, she manages to make us feel like we’re meeting someone that we feel like we’ve known forever. If you’re a fan of Clairo, or of ’90s pop, we beg you to give this song a listen. We promise you’ll love it.
‘Grow’ – “Make my wish and let it go.”
We love this line because it takes LIMBO back to where it was in ‘Fold’ when she talks about making wishes. ‘Grow’ finds Blair in a moment of uncertainty. She’s leaning back into her childhood fantasies as she accepts the changes in her life. In simpler turns, she allows herself to ‘grow.’
We hope we’ve done our job in getting you to listen to Blair Lee’s genius EP LIMBO. After you’ve done so, pop back in and let us know your favorite song! Find us in the comments or at @thehoneypop on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
