We want you to help us fill in the blanks here: Nicholas Galitzine starring alongside ___? Despite even the Red, White & Royal Blue color tinge of our article title seeping into the film poster, your mind probably sounded out the letter “Aaaaa.” And yes, that’s Anne Hathaway. We totally understand. They’ve kind of become synonymous at this point. Just like Nicholas’s The Idea of You character, Hayes Campbell tends to wind down his passenger seat all of the way so fans and paparazzi alike don’t peer into tinted car windows. Anne is most likely somewhere right now rapping about how her costar’s name rhymes with magazine (“Nicholas Galitzine, he’s got a face for a magazine, but he’s more than just a beauty queen,” per The Kelly Clarkson Show). It’s pretty catchy, huh?
A Rilvaring Love Story
However, there was obviously another starring opposite role in the July 2023 archives, and we genuinely have to do some mind-searching to get there. Wait, you’ve got it, too? Yep, Taylor Zakhar Perez! Now, let’s dive into the plot. Nicholas Galitzine’s character, with a name as regal as Prince Henry, and Taylor’s character, known as Alex, form our favorite enemies-to-lovers couple in this movie adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s book. Instead of reenacting their iconic meet-cute moment with a toppling cake, we’re celebrating their love story with American and English flag cake toppers. And the best part? There’s a sequel in the works!
But we didn’t have all of that The Idea of You talk for nothing, did we? We thought it would be fun to personality profile some of the characters, four really, into which August Moon (Henry’s band) song would be on their Spotify replay. Which tune would they be strutting down the halls of the White House, too, or perhaps even a royal gala?
Nora Holleran
Nora is the first official shipper of FirstPrince (that’s, of course, Prince Henry and Alex) since the latter and her are BFFs who tell each other absolutely everything, including a royal schmooze. She’s the friend everyone needs in your corner. She is witty, spunky, comforting, and looks killer in a puffy, red cocktail dress. Since ‘Closer’ acted as the first song, Hayes, that’s not Henry, but Hayes, and yes, we’re seeing the matching alliteration now, serenaded to Anne’s character Solène, we see it as fitting.
Zahra Bankston
Say the sequel to Red, White & Royal Blue is first held in a proper theatre before coming to Prime Video (this isn’t just an excuse to scream out “invite us,” promise, but, really, please?). Well, Zahra is the type of person who already has an invite, is head of the queue to steal the best spot in the theatre, and has enough snacks for her and friends. She’s the one person you know is going to get stuff done! This includes bringing Prince Henry and Alex back together when we’re at the peak of the movie when the royal kingdom decides to separate them due to public backlash. Therefore, ‘I Got You’ is on her heavy rotation!
Alex Claremont-Diaz
You know how we mentioned a little cake war at the start of this piece? Yeah, we’re totally blaming that one on Alex, and we’re sure that Prince Henry still is, too. He is the one that first smudges the latter’s suit after all, after the icing smudges his drinking glass, so that’s a point against Alex, right? But then Prince Henry does flick something at him, so that’s a point against Alex being the traitor of this cake war? Alex then pulls him to the floor, which causes the actual cake to come toppling down on both of them. So, it’s looking like one point for Prince Henry but two for Alex! However, it doesn’t matter because ‘Taste’ is exactly what would be going through our heads as we’ve just achieved having the whole thing for ourselves and not having to share the dessert goodness with anyone else.
Prince Henry
Although both boys put down their guards at various points in the film, there is a gorgeous scene on the dock that calls for us to hand ‘Guard Down’ to Prince Henry. He’s having a hard time with the world around them catching up with their relationship, not being sure if anyone will accept a homosexual prince. Alex doesn’t see any of this; he keeps tracing circles on the other’s back, blissfully happy. At one point, Prince Henry can’t stop himself from feeling overwhelmed, so he dives into the lake surrounding them. He’s not exactly running away, sure. But is he swimming away? Boy, he probably took so many freestyle classes with his crown-wearing peers.
Since Nicholas Galitzine has wiped off the sprawling rocker tattoos for a blue royal sash, we’ll return the flashbulb spotlight to Prince Henry. Who knows what revelations will be in the sequel film? As for now, did we correctly sort the Red, White & Royal Blue characters into their personality-fit August Moon song? If not, which track do you think better suits them?
