Last year, our favorite Philadelphia rock band Grayscale released their first new single, ‘Not Afraid To Die’ which was the introduction to their new era. Don’t get us wrong. ‘Let Go’ and the clips we’ve heard of ‘Landslide’ are absolute bangers. But their newly released track is the perfect continuation of the ‘NATD’ theme. ‘Mum II’ is a vulnerable and beautiful song about the process of forgiveness and healing.
This is a love song about my mother. Her and I have had a difficult relationship for a long time for many reasons… This song is a follow up to “Mum”, …I found myself not wanting to play “Mum” live anymore, I think out of an emotional protectiveness and empathy towards what she has been through, her struggles, and her problems. As this feeling grew, I eventually wanted to replace the song with one that reflects how I feel now and how our relationship has grown.
Collin Walsh, vocalist of Grayscale
Both the song and the music video are heartfelt sentiments and reference their previous music. We still can’t get over how seamlessly it’s all intertwined. Here are the references we found in ‘Mum II.’
“Ma, you were in my sleep again.” // “I saw you in my sleep last night” (‘Mum’)
“I’m a man now and I’ve healed from it all from the gravel scars on both of my palms” // “Falling down, scraped knees, graveled palms, standing there all alone.” (‘Mum’)
“Dreams of Asbury shores” // “Irish dreams by the sea” (‘Asbury’)
“Chrysanthemums on the floor,” // “You were my chrysanthemum,” (‘Mum’)
The music video is primarily a reference to ‘Asbury,’ off of their 2019 album, Nella Vita. But like the song, the video spins it in a more positive light. You can watch the ‘Mum II’ music video below.
They’ll be on tour this summer with BOYS LIKE GIRLS, so be sure to get tickets! What do you think of ‘Mum II’ and what was your reaction to the new Grayscale music video for it? Let us know in the comments, on Facebook, Instagram, or by tweeting us @thehoneypop!
