Kehlani got a taste of a solo career as a music artist when they released their first music project and mixtape entitled Cloud 9 in 2014. After its release, they began making waves from left to right. From then to now, they’ve released three mixtapes and three albums. At the moment, Kehlani is getting ready to release their fourth album entitled Crash, set to drop on June 21, 2024. While we wait for the new album, enjoy this list of ten songs by Kehlani that we think your current or next playlist could use.
‘Distraction’
This upbeat song has Kehlani asking someone if they would be okay with taking their mind and attention away from things they don’t want to think about or have to deal with. We all have those moments sometimes. There’s nothing wrong with having some company and fun to avoid being alone with your thoughts.
‘Honey’
Kehlani has never been one to shy away from their love of women. Kehlani’s smooth vocals sing “I like my girls just like I like my honey; sweet”, letting us know what type of women they’re attracted to. If you’re looking for a Kehlani song to add to your LGBTQIA+ playlist, we here at THP would say this should be one of them.
’24/7′
’24/7′ is one of Kehlani’s most vulnerable songs to date. They talk about their struggles with mental health and the emotions that they tend to go through. While Kehlani might be in the public eye, they remind us with the song that they’re only human. They remind listeners that while they might go through a wave of emotions, sometimes all at once, it’s okay to feel how you feel. It makes a good song for a playlist that you feel like you’re alone.
‘Love Language’
Five known love languages exist out there. Kehlani knows this although they don’t know their partner’s love language. While they don’t know it yet, they sing about wanting to learn it so they can be on the same page. It’s a song that a lot of people have to deal with from time to time. There’s nothing wrong with it and this is a song that lets listeners know that.
‘Good Thing’ With Zedd
Do you need a song to add to a self-love playlist? ‘Good Thing’ by Zedd with Kehlani is that song. Kehlani sings about how they don’t need to date or be in a relationship with someone else. While they could do those things, they could date themselves. This song is a reminder that while being with someone could be nice – dating and getting to know yourself is equally great.
‘Everybody Business’
Kehlani doesn’t shy away from speaking about anything that might be bothering them. In ‘Everybody’s Business’ Kehlani addresses the rumors about them and their relationships. They remind listeners that someone’s always going to have something to say but at the end of the day, it’s all talk with no backing. A bonus to the song is that they gave a slight nod to Pharrell Williams’ 2003 hit ‘Frontin’ while carrying a carefree sound.
‘Hate The Club’ (Ft. Masego)
If you’re like some of us at THP, then you might be able to relate to Kehlani’s ‘Hate The Club’. Not everyone likes going to the club on a Friday or Saturday night. Most of us would rather stay at home and chill inside with a good book or watch our favorite comfort show. Kehlani is no different than people who are like that. However, while they hate the club, they’re willing to make an exception for a certain someone that they have their eyes on. Can you say anthem?
‘little story’
We here at THP love ourselves a good little story. The same goes for Kehlani’s song ‘Little Story’. The song takes us on a journey about a girl who’s a writer and Kehlani wants to write a story for them. And who wouldn’t want a song written for them? Stories can have a good or bad ending. As for the accompanying video, instead of Kehlani continuing the journey with the girl she’s singing to, they choose their daughter in the end.
‘altar’
The song is intended to be honoring those that Kehlani has lost in the past. Instead of singing to a somber beat, they decided that they would give the song an upbeat vibe. The song takes us through the journey of the emotions that people go through when they lose someone they love. They remind us that while one might be gone physically, they’re always close in other ways.
‘After Hours’
‘After Hours‘ is the first single from Kehlani’s upcoming album. The song samples Scatta Burrell’s ‘Coolie Dance Rhythm’. The song has an upbeat and fun tempo with lyrics to match the vibe. ‘After Hours’ is all about enjoying yourself. With summer right around the corner, it makes a good song to add to a summer-isque playlist.
There you have it, ten songs by Kehlani that we at THP think you should add to one of your playlists. Are you thinking about adding any of the songs mentioned in the article to your next playlist? Is there any songs that aren’t listed that you think should be on the list?
