Ever since they debuted back in April, we’ve been obsessed with Big Ocean and their single, ‘Glow.’ The first K-POP group who are hard of hearing have earned the hearts of fans all around the world, creating their international fanbase PADO (Korean for “wave.”) After bringing us hope with their debut single, a reimagining of 1st gen group H.O.T’s ‘Light,’ Big Ocean have made their first ever comeback with ‘BLOW,’ and we are obsessed!
‘BLOW’ is an energetic, feel-good song that captivates the listener with funky beats and enticing lyrics that really set the party mood that’s perfect for the summer season. “The sun goes down // The stress runs out // We hit the floor our hearts go up in flames” invites listeners and Pado (their loved fandom) everywhere to drop their cares and get their groove on with this fun and fresh dance number.
The trio debuted the song for the first time on their TikTok Cozy Home Concert on June 1st in collaboration with TikTok Korea. While their debut single ‘Glow’ had a heavy focus on using Korean Sign Language (KSL), ‘BLOW’ turns more towards American Sign Language (ASL) as part of the group’s goal to be as accessible as possible. The members actively learn ASL and ISL (International Sign Language) in addition to KSL in hopes of reaching a wider audience with accessibility.
Big Ocean have truly been making waves since its debut. In addition to performances on Inkigayo, Show! Music Core and Simply Con-Tour, Big Ocean host daily TikTok lives, inviting Pado along their journey as a rookie K-POP group, giving exclusive behind-the-scenes looks at photoshoots, dance practices, collaborations, and more. The regular streaming sessions have helped accumulate a strong international fanbase, with over 379k followers on TikTok.
Big Ocean has also gained the support of a number of its senior groups, including SEVENTEEN, RIIZE, Kiss of Life, and The Kingdom, who have collaborated with the members and offered advice to them as a newly debuted group. But perhaps the biggest support of all comes from disabled fans who feel like, for the first time, they are being represented in the K-POP scene. In addition to hard-of-hearing fans, Big Ocean has gained fans with a wide range of disabilities because accessibility and representation are hard to come by in any music scene, let alone K-POP. Big Ocean, along with their entertainment company, Parastar Entertainment, are paving the way to make space for accessibility and inclusion for disabled fans. It’s long overdue, but we are thrilled to see the progression and have full belief that Chanyeon, Hyunjin, and Jiseok are going to make a difference.
