Every band has that album. The one that acts as not just a staple of how talented they are, but also sounds as amazing as the first time you listened to it when you hear it. For Paramore, that’s Riot! If you had a pulse on the alternative scene in the late 2000’s, you more than just knew the name Paramore. Their first album, All We Know Is Falling, alerted the entire scene that Paramore was here to stay. But we don’t know if the band themselves knew how iconic Riot! was going to be. So iconic in fact, that to this day if you put on ‘Misery Business’ in a crowded room, at least half of the room is guaranteed to sing along.
And like every iconic album, Riot! has a lot of iconic tracks on it. And you know we’ll take any chance to talk about them!
‘For A Pessimist, I’m Pretty Optimistic’
We’re suckers for a great opening track, and that’s exactly what ‘For A Pessimist, I’m Pretty Optimistic’ is. This song has you screaming the chorus along with Hayley Williams as if you wrote the words yourself. Not to mention the dips into her lower register before the chorus…heavenly doesn’t even begin to describe it!
“I never wanted to say this. You never wanted to stay. I put my faith in you, so much faith, and then you just threw it away. You threw it away.”
‘crushcrushcrush’
Nothing compares to this song in our hearts. This is a tried and true Paramore-punk-rock-classic. We vividly remember watching this music video on MTV in our rooms and feeling reborn. And we still feel that same way whenever we put this one on. If you need us, we’ll be replicating Hayley’s look in this video.
“They taped over your mouth. Scribbled out the truth with their lies, your little spies.”
‘We Are Broken’
There’s something so perfect about slower Paramore songs, and ‘We Are Broken’ showcases what we mean effortlessly. This is a roll down your car windows and sing it at the top of your lungs on the freeway kind of song.
“‘Cause we are broken. What must we do to restore our innocence and all the promise we adored? Give us life again, ’cause we just wanna be whole.”
‘Fences’
‘Fences’ has had us two-stepping in our bedrooms since the first time we heard it. And how could you blame us? Not to mention the way we’ve dedicated this song to every person who has ever wronged us. It’s therapeutic!
“Yeah, yeah you’re asking for it with every breath that you breathe in, just breathe it in. Yeah, yeah, well you’re just a mess. You do all this big talking. So now let’s see you walk it, I said let’s see you walk it.“
‘When It Rains’
The way that we feel about ‘When It Rains’ should be studied in a lab. This song is like a church service for us, hands in the air, and singing our hearts out. Not only has it been a staple in all of our comfort playlists, but it’s also the perfect track for a long drive.
“And when it rains, you always find an escape. Just running away from all of the ones who love you, from everything. You made yourself a bed at the bottom of the blackest hole. And you’ll sleep ’til May and you’ll say that you don’t want to see the sun anymore.”
‘That’s What You Get’
A timeless classic, and a party staple to get everyone in the room singing along. This song feels so cathartic to sing and we can’t get enough!
“Pain, make your way to me, to me and I’ll always be just so inviting. If I ever start to think straight this heart will start a riot in me. Let’s start, start, hey!”
