Getting to know an artist a little deeper is always something interesting, fun, and often inspiring. We got to chat with Gabriela Bee and we came out finding out so much more than we expected. If the name is familiar, perhaps you know some of her tracks already, or maybe you heard her latest single and collab, ‘BLUE.’ And if it is not, it’s about to be.
We already fell for ‘BLUE‘ as soon as it came out. The collab between Gabriela and Powfu left us feeling quite emotional, and if you’ve listened, you’ll know what we mean. The single is part of the talented Bee’s upcoming EP, Stories, so this talk comes at the perfect time to prepare you and make you her fan if you aren’t already. Not only that, but we have a feeling you’ll find this artist very relatable and with quite the humor. Really a person with color to them

Welcome to The Honey POP, Gabriela! Love to have a fellow bee with us. Can you start us off by introducing yourself using three of your songs that you think describe your sound the best?
Three of my songs that describe my sound the best are definitely ‘Maybe,’ ‘It Gets Old,’ and ‘Blue.’ They all have components of laid-back, vibey production, but can really be taken into a different sentiment lyrically, and even in other ways like ‘Maybe’ does, where it intros a whole separate sound in the bridge.
Speaking of your songs, your latest single, ‘BLUE,’ has the sweetest meaning behind it. It also offers full immersion to the listener. Do you remember where your thoughts went while you recorded the song for it to sound this emotional?
During the recording session that day, I remember feeling very nostalgic while writing. This track in specific reminds me of all the familiar people and things that bring comfort to me, I wanted to encapsulate those memories into a song that people can interpret however they want.
How would you say ‘BLUE’ is different from your other songs? What sets it apart from the rest of the tracklist of your upcoming EP Stories?
‘BLUE’ is sort of in its own world musically, and that’s what makes it so special. There are components of R&B/soul, amplified by dream pop energy that give it that meditative feel. Directing the production behind this song was so much fun, and I’m even considering making a record, inspired by ‘BLUE’ and the way it makes me feel. Something groovyyyy 🙂
Blue is, obviously, the color that represents this lovely single. But if you could give colors to the rest of the songs in Stories, what would they be? Is there an overall color that you would assign to the EP?
I am so glad you asked this question because with synesthesia, I’m constantly inspired by colour when I make a song. The focus track ‘STORIES’, to me, is a wine-red shade of burgundy. Similar to those old-school, velvety movie theatre seats. ‘MAYBE’ also a red similar to ‘STORIES’ but a little bit lighter. ‘NOTE TO SELF’ is a soft shade of mustard orange. ‘I WANT A HEARTBREAK’ is so brown to me I can practically smell wood when I hear it. Not sure why, but it’s just so oaky. ‘WISH YOU THE BEST’ is sky blue. ‘IT GETS OLD’ is a pastel yellow.
We can’t wait for Stories to be out so we can listen to all its songs. So, we have to know, do you have a favorite song or lyrics from Stories?
My personal favourite from the EP would have to be ‘IT GETS OLD.’ It’s been special to me ever since I wrote it. But my favourite lyric from the EP would have to be from ‘STORIES’, in the second verse:
“And I loved you
Like you knew me
But we’re just actors in a scene”
You pour your heart into your music, how does it feel to be this vulnerable, knowing not only people you know, but complete strangers will listen to your songs, and a lot will definitely relate?
It has definitely taken a bit for me to feel completely comfortable in showing people all sides of my heart in my music, but it helps a lot when I send my friends songs I write before they come out, and am able to fully open up to them about what they’re about, trying not to hide anything I’m feeling, and gaining confidence when it’s time to practice that in the writing room. Knowing strangers around the world are listening to what I create and am able to evoke some sort of emotion in them reminds me of why I started doing this in the first place. To just bring any sort of feeling to someone at all. And on top of that, they relate my thoughts to their personal experiences? Blows my mind every time.
You have said that your single ‘Look At You Now’ can be a good match for the ending of a Disney movie. If you were to write up the plot for the perfect movie for it to soundtrack, what would it look like?
I see this movie being similar to the plot of Inside Out, maybe about a girl figuring out who she is, trying to find herself through others when it was really her own heart she should have been listening to. Realizing that she’s her own best friend, and she should learn to love herself a little more.
We would love to learn a little more about you as a person and we know our readers will too. Can you share some of your hobbies with us?
I love everything to do with writing. Whether it’s poetry, or writing essays in school, I’ve always been drawn to literature, and I feel as though if singing weren’t my first choice, I’d definitely become an author of some sort. I’ve never told anyone this but I’ve written a couple of fanfictions in my time. I also love drawing and sketching what I feel, maybe sometime I’ll use my sketches for the cover art of my tracks.
Now for the favorites question. If you had to recommend us some of your favorite movies, books, games, or songs, which would you pick?
My favourite movies of all time are Coraline and Ratatouille, hands down. Everyone close to me knows how annoying I am about those two films. Pure cinema. I don’t read many books but one book that I’ve loved for a long time and reread a few chapters from it every so often is Again, but Better by Christine Riccio. I think about that novel often, it was actually one of the few books that I really immersed myself into, and read without losing interest. My favourite game is Hay Day, but Papa’s Sushiria comes a close second when there’s no wifi. (Basically I’m a 7-year-old.) I couldn’t possibly choose my favourite songs of ALL TIME, but ones that changed me as a person were ‘Fake Plastic Trees’ by Radiohead, ‘Somebody to Love’ by Queen, and ‘A Day In The Life’ by The Beatles.
With Stories dropping in mid-August, what other plans do you have for the second half of the year?
For the second of the year, I’m going to continue focusing on finding my sound, whichever genre that takes me, and hopefully collaborating with some more cool artists. I hope to also get on stage very soon 🙂
We love sweet things, so we would love as your last answer to hear about your current ambitions (so we can hype you up).
My current ambitions are to
1. Rule the country
2. Be able to wake up on time
