Welcome to the latest of our exclusive interviews: this time, it’s the Riah edition! We got to catch up with the singer-songwriter about her latest single, the ripely honest ‘Bed,’ as well as Coachella, Grey’s Anatomy, and more!
Riah’s lyricism is always rich with vulnerability, which if you didn’t know, is a sure way to become a THP fave. ‘Bed’ is also 10/10 relatable content; we’ve all had those days where getting up out of bed feels like an impossible task. We were so excited to chat with Riah about her storytelling, and more, in this interview! So we won’t keep you waiting any longer…
Riah X THP Exclusive Interview
Huge congratulations on the release of ‘Bed!’ How does it feel to have the song out in the world?
It feels amazing and terrifying! Anytime you put something you’ve poured your heart and soul into it can feel really vulnerable, but I’m so glad it’s out. I’m really proud of it.
It’s obviously a very vulnerable track, which we really admire. Is being so open in your work intimidating, or does it tend to come more naturally?
It comes naturally in this season to some extent. I want to be more honest in my writing and tell my story but its way easier to be open in a studio with a couple of people than it is thinking about putting it out and people hearing it. That’s a different story. Definitely intimidating when you realize it’s no longer just in your hands.
We were so impressed with the duality of ‘Bed,’ too! How it’s so confessional but enchanting at the same time! After all, we all love our beds right? Do you have any advice for fans who relate to the lyrics?
I think we all have those days where we feel that weight on our chests, and we feel paralyzed. At least, I hope I’m not alone in that. I’ve really focused on what gets me out of bed and tried to give less power to the anxiety or the fear. Gratitude is a really powerful force. I’m grateful for a beautiful family and friends. Doesn’t mean that everything else disappears but it can help put things into perspective for me and help see the beauty all around.
On a lighter note, when you do have a day to rest (in a healthy way!), what do you like to get up to?
Oh my gosh, my dream rest day would be matcha, pilates, horseback riding, Erewhon, and reading a good book. Perfection.
Her Growth
You’ve spoken a little about how your mindset and how it’s changed since becoming a parent – congratulations by the way! How would you say this new stage of life has helped you in your work?
Thank you! Seeing things through a kid’s eyes changes you. Changes your priorities and your mindset. I’ve always been passionate about music, but something about having a daughter put a fire under me to keep pressing and to keep pursuing my dreams.
You’ve performed at some epic festivals, including Coachella! How does performing live impact your creative process the next time you’re in the studio? What are the biggest learnings from festival shows?
Coachella was unreal. Live shows in any form motivate me to keep writing and releasing songs. I just love that rush of being in front of a crowd that loves live music. Coachella was so special because everyone is there to have the time of their lives. They are living in the moment and fully present, and it’s one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had. Can’t wait to play a full set there one day.
Grey’s Anatomy And TV
Your music has been featured in Grey’s Anatomy, aka one of the most beloved TV shows ever! Are you a fan of the series? What was your reaction when you found out your music would be on it?
YES! I actually had never seen it when I had my first placement on Grey’s. I was fresh out of high school and didn’t watch much TV, but I knew a lot about the show because it was such a phenomenon. Once the episode with my song aired, the season 6 finale, I went back and watched all 6 seasons and was HOOKED. Like I’m embarrassed how fast I watched those 6 seasons. When I found out that I got the placement on the show, it was a complete game changer for me. I was on my way to fashion school a few weeks later, and it felt like a huge sign and confirmation that I should pursue music, and so I decided to move to Nashville and go for it. It completely changed my life.
If you could be on the soundtrack for any TV show or film, which would you pick and why?
I just finished the new season of The Bear, and the music is unbelievable. That would be a dream.
Final Thoughts
What else is on the cards for you in the second half of 2024?
