If we had to guess, the Short n’ Sweet laboratory would be much like the Los Angeles pop-up. With her pumps tossed into the air, a blue-tinged Sabrina Carpenter leaning down on a photo booth with the less papery version of her tucked inside. Blush heart-crested chairs, folding fans as lampshades, and presumably the sultry purring of ‘Bed Chem.’
The sexually overt track was co-written by a name bound to be magnetized to the creative flow of your fave, Amy Allen, and raven-fringed poet Julia Michaels. Then, of course, we’re pouring in the fixed variable of John Ryan being one of the producers of this track into our musical Bunsen burner. (He’s also the album’s primary producer as a whole.) And the chemical reactions are her ‘Nonsense’ outros being the precedent to its cheeky Shakespearn second verse alongside an early 2000s stamp of approval. Firstly, nodding nostalgically to Christina Aguilera’s come hither in ‘Come On Over.’ And secondly, a piano riff ode to Vanessa Carlton’s ‘A Thousand Miles,’ which has Sabrina vocally harmonizing with instruments. That’s bound to be an explosive combustion!
Short n’ Sweet Playbook
She’s practically cooked up a flirtatious equation for us to pull our crushes: “(SC₅′) + (BC₆)⁶ = Short n’ Sweet Playbook.” Or something to that nature. Of course, the SC represents our gal. Who is noticeably 5 inches (“Oh, I leave quite an impression,” she states, padding her lips with one of the Prada Beauty sticks she’s been spotted with recently. It’s just a maroon replacing the complimentary album palette, staring into a knife’s reflection that belongs to the take-out-the-third-party collection on her decadent bed. “Five feet, to be exact.”). The sixes around “BC” touch on ‘Bed Chem’ as the sixth track on her sixth album, which some locals are penning as her sophomore album. But we digress. We won’t land ourselves into any fandom wars here, we promise. It wouldn’t be very mindful nor demure of us.
Regardless, these impish moments (a buzzword taken from her interview with Zane Lowe) around the record are only ever in our favor. Not only is it in the subtle slide of a track in our message exchange to our crushes, but with Sabrina’s wit on full display, the chemistry sits in all of the pickup scenarios we’ve been able to create around these songs.
‘Juno’
For example, take a cutout of Sabrina’s and her muse’s faces and photoshop them onto the orange and white striped Juno poster. He’ll sport a dorkish, out-of-style sweatband. She’ll be profiling to the side, her oversized stomach protruding outward to signify that she’s pregnant. Because the only x equals that we have to work out is that Juno is synonymous with falling pregnant.
Still, many other amorous lyrics are here, such as the Easter Egg answers to a photo shoot that had said “fuzzy pink handcuffs” just cuffed off to the side. “Wanna try out some freaky positions? / Have you ever tried this one?” is for those spontaneous Google searches. And the iconically written because she can incite a whole arena to echo these words back to her for the giggles, “I’m so fu*kin’ ho*ny.” But it does hide this spicy side behind cute idioms, such as the young Britney Spears-referenced note in the intro. Additionally, the cascading of clamoring drums leads to a mystified guitar solo that would only ever accompany a parody montage.
Easily, we’re formulating the pick out of one of your favorite movies to base a date around it! Whether it’s staying within the same passionate lane as Juno or having you both crashing around on the floor to blast out of an escape room for an action flick, the goal is recreation. Make your date think you’re no longer in this reality but have dipped into the movie screen.
‘Taste’
This one’s for the messy girls. Those who skip out on therapy sessions and drop a Short n’ Sweet track onto their social media accounts that accurately sums up every rampant thought that has yet to dust the space in a conversation. See ‘Sharpest Tool.’ But that’s more whispering, lower text thoughts after our scandalous outburst, so we return to ‘Taste.’ Its country rumblings under an electric guitar accompany such intimate, witty comebacks as “You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you” for when we know we’re on our crush’s mind no matter the scenario. But of course, we can’t help ourselves. Sometimes, those intrusive thoughts creep in, like, “He pins you down on the carpet / Makes paintings with his tongue.” This lyric could’ve been alluded to when Sabrina painted a self-portrait with Vanity Fair.
Picture the quarrels, the makeup makeout sessions after sharpened words and ignored calls, and if you’re anything like Sabrina, the Death Becomes Her pins on one’s muse board. Don’t go overboard, sure. But sometimes, it’s in the tension! And bantering is fun, right? So saddle up for a competition with a bitter lover, whether laser tag, a video game, or something more snarky.
Sabrina Turned Your ‘Slim Pickins’ Around, Didn’t She?
Whether you’re slipping your lipstick-stained kisses Short n’ Sweet into a vinyl player or the visual is more so brushed against Sabrina’s shoulder, your favorite track is bound to be on heavy rotation. But what is our 5-foot starlet listening to? “Right now, I listen to Bee Gees every day,” she tells Zane, stumbling into her mother’s celebrity crush, Andy. We bet you knew that already, though, having listened to the entire Apple Music interview. If you haven’t, make a pit stop here and then hop on over to our social media (Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook) to let us know which song you’re taking inspiration from to flirt with your crush.
