It’s no secret that we haven’t stopped listening to Gracie Abrams’ The Secret Of Us since it came out in June. As longtime fans of Gracie, of course we’re excited for everything she releases. But for her most fun, extroverted album yet, it felt like watching our best friend come out of her shell. Perhaps we’re a bit dramatic, but we hope you’ll allow it while we discuss each song on The Secret Of Us (Deluxe).
‘Cool’
We know this is a bold statement to make, but this may be our favorite. It’s so classic Gracie Abrams with a touch of her new experimental side. It even sounds a bit like she’s looking back on the Good Riddance era with her new perspective. And the buildup at the end reminds us of everything we love about Gracie Abrams music (see ‘Free Now’). Not to mention that it’s so true! She is ‘so cool’ now! And that brings us to the next song.
‘That’s So True’
Gracie’s excitement for us to see this one was undeniable, and we can hear her joy throughout the entire process of the song. We just know she was smiling all through the writing and recording. And it’s still there every time she performs it with her best friend Audrey, and the joy is simply contagious. We hope Gracie’s new energy is here to stay because we cannot stop dancing to this song.
‘I Told You Things’
Remember that time that we said we hope she keeps her infectious energy? You know, last paragraph? Well, here’s the thing: we meant that. However, a sad Gracie song is a staple for any album. And as much as we need to dance to Gracie songs, we need to be able to cry to some. Especially when she sings about losing color in her face after her famous transition from the black and white Good Riddance cover to The Secret Of Us‘s bright yellows, pinks, and blues.
‘Packing It Up’
Now this is the best of both worlds. In a way, it’s a bittersweet love song. On one hand, it sounds like classic sad Gracie. On the other hand, she seems to be the happiest we’ve ever seen her. And right after ‘I Told You Things’ declares that she’ll “pack it up and practice leaving,” ‘Packing It Up’ turns the story around. We guess love really does show itself when it’s least expected. And honestly, we couldn’t be more grateful to Gracie’s genius storytelling for showing both sides of her story on this album.
Live From Vevo
Watching Gracie Abrams tour videos is no longer enough. We need to be listening to the live versions of ‘I Love You, I’m Sorry,’ ‘I Knew It, I Know You,’ and ‘Free Now’ at all hours of the day. These are so special to us; we need to express how grateful we are that Gracie deemed us worthy of hearing her hauntingly vulnerable live vocals and note changes.
