Looking for your new favorite band? Look no further than LVNDR.SOUND! We have fallen in love with this band through our experience listening to In The Dark. This record shows that genre isn’t something you can use to box them in, that they defy boundaries in that field. We were so amazed with the record that we knew we had to talk to LVNDR.SOUND all about it! We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did!
Listen to In The Dark here!
Hello! Thank you for chatting with us! To start us off, how would you describe LVNDR.SOUND to someone who is tuning in for the first time?
LVNDR.SOUND is an electronic trio based in Denver, Colorado, created by Josh Fairman (Sunsquabi), Jay.Greens, and Geoffrey Bremer. The group blends future bass, electro soul, house, and hip-hop to create an immersive listening experience. With intricate sound design, heartfelt lyricism, and a mix of live instrumentation with electronic beats, LVNDR.SOUND crafts a unique sonic landscape.
In The Dark is officially out in the world! How are you guys feeling after this release?
We’re super hyped! It’s been amazing to see so many people connect with the album. We put a lot of energy into creating a vibe, not just through the sound and music, but with a more vocal-centric, lyric-driven approach compared to our first record. It was a nerve-wracking leap and a more vulnerable version of ourselves, but it seems to have paid off in a big way because people are really resonating with the new direction.
With In The Dark you guys had previously released six of the ten songs on the album. What goes into choosing which songs you want to get that solo moment for putting out the entire project?
Part of the decision is definitely a promotional strategy. In today’s music landscape, especially in EDM and dance music, singles are easier to promote—especially for younger, developing artists. But there’s also an element of wanting to save some of the more special tracks for the full album release. For this record, we held back some of the more vocal-driven songs since that was a new direction for us.
In The Dark follows your debut album Lavender, which came out last year. What do you think you learned from that release that you were able to transfer to this cycle?
Our first album really gave us the freedom to experiment with different vibes and define our sound. With In The Dark, we were able to lock into that sound and focus more on storytelling and emotional content, giving this release a bit more depth than the first one.
When looking at the four tracks you saved for the album release, how did you pick ‘Nostalgic Nights’ to be the album focus track?
It came down to us being really excited about the track. It has this future funk, Daft Punk-meets-Nile Rogers vibe while still showcasing our distinctive style. We also loved Jay’s vocal performance on it—the hook just hits differently.
And speaking of ‘Nostalgic Nights,’ we know Daft Punk had served some inspiration for you guys on this track, can you point to a track that you think was particularly influential?
Definitely. Anything from Random Access Memories—the Nile Rogers guitar parts and Paul Jackson Jr. parts are incredible. Give Life Back To Music, Lose Yourself to Dance, Get Lucky, and Doin’ It Right are a few of our favorites.
One thing we really loved about this album as a whole was the inability to box it in genre-wise. You guys really experiment sonically. Is the choice to not aim for a specific genre intentional? Or would you say it happens naturally?
We definitely fit under the broad umbrella of electronic dance music, but it’s a wide spectrum. Most artists in that world tend to blend styles to create their sound. So yes, we intentionally avoid sticking to a single subgenre, and we like to fuse everything we do with a little hip-hop swagger.
Now that we have the album, we of course have to ask about when we’re going to have the chance to hear this record live! Are there plans for a tour in the new year?
As of now, we don’t have any tour plans, but we definitely hope to hit the road in the future. So, if anyone’s looking for direct support, hit us up! We can’t wait to connect with everyone live when the time comes.
We want to jump back to reflecting on ‘Lavender’ really quickly. The album came out almost two years ago now, how soon after that release did the creative process for ‘In The Dark’ begin?
Some of the songs on In The Dark were actually started while we were working on Lavender. Others didn’t come together until late last year, once we had a clear vision for the concept and direction of the album. Our motto is to never stop creating. In fact, we’re already working on a follow-up single for In The Dark, set to release in mid-December.
We also wanted to ask about the ‘No Time’ music video which we love. Can you talk a little bit about how that video came to be?
‘No Time’ was intended to be a continuation of the ‘In The Dark’ music video. The premise of ‘In The Dark’ is finding our way back to ourselves and the light in life through music. ‘No Time’ takes that a step further by realizing that wasting time in the darkness isn’t an option—you have to pull yourself out of your trauma and comfort zone to create the life you want. The idea of everything moving in reverse around us while we moved forward symbolized that reversal of negative behaviors. Filming that in NYC, walking backward through the busiest city in the world, was an insane experience!
‘No Time’ really focuses on the idea of choosing to leave darkness behind, which plays into the album’s narrative of healing and growth. Was it inspired by a particular personal experience or meant to be more of a general narrative of the concept?
‘No Time’ is deeply rooted in our personal experiences. It’s about the realization that, to be happy, you have to go out and create that happiness yourself. For me, it came from a realization I had in 2020 after going through some tough family situations and dealing with long COVID. No matter what life throws at you, you have to pick yourself back up and keep going. Life is short and precious, so you can’t waste time.
Once again, thank you guys so much for taking the time to chat with us! Before we let you go, what does the rest of 2024 look like for you? What can fans look forward to?
We’re already hard at work on new releases. We have a new single coming mid-December but, after that, we’ll probably take it easy for the rest of the year, focusing on family and our other musical projects. Be sure to check out Perception Records to see what else the guys from LVNDR are working on, because we all have other projects releasing music this year and next.
