Yet again, IVE have totally served with their IVE EMPATHY mini-album! It’s a six-track collection that proves Gaeul, Yujin, Rei, Wonyoung, Liz, and Leeseo’s irresistible charm and star power. From the pop-rock ‘REBEL HEART’ to the alluring ‘TKO,’ we’re more excited than ever to dive into IVE and keep this latest EP on repeat.
IVE are the ultimate K-Pop It Girls, and they let their superstar qualities shine through so well in their music! Let’s celebrate IVE EMPATHY by spotlighting some special lyrics that will help you get into your own It Girl ‘ATTITUDE’ like them. For clarity, we’ll be using the songs’ English translations by the Genius Korea community.
“Start as if I achieved it all, end as if I won it all…”
This line on ‘REBEL HEART,’ the mini-album’s anthemic opener and first title track, introduces us to the winning mindset the girls have, choosing to stay confident and optimistic rather than doubt themselves or their abilities. IVE have worked relentlessly hard to make their dreams come true, and their efforts have earned them several dozen awards and millions of fans worldwide. Their passion and drive has been so inspiring to us!
“The more I know you, the more I feel heavy-hearted…”
Opening with a guitar line a little reminiscent of the iconic ‘ELEVEN’ intro, ‘FLU’ is a slick track that compares a toxic partner to a flu that’s getting IVE sick. As they come to terms with the relationship’s reality, they realize just how much it’s getting them down. One of the most important aspects of becoming your best self is admitting which situations in your life are actually harming you and choosing to step away from them the best you can. Ditch the people who make you sick and you’ll feel better!
“We’re gonna be together, you’re not alone forever…”
Complete with gorgeous vocals and a gentle guitar line that amps up for the chorus, ‘You Wanna Cry’ is a sweet celebration of love, friendship, and true connection. The girls comfort someone they care about and offer to let them cry in their arms instead of by themselves. You can take it as an ode to their bond as a group, or even as a message to DIVEs listening! We chose this line for our It Girl lyric list because the most powerful It Girls know that everyone needs someone to lean on in hard times. It doesn’t make you a burden or weak at all to need a hand! On top of that, being in your It Girl energy means you can uplift the people around you.
“I’ve already overcome the overwhelmingly painful growing pains I went through…”
One of our favorite IVE b-sides ever already, ‘Thank U’ is a loving letter to the circumstances that make us who we are, shouting out IVE’s past selves, childhood dolls, and others in their lives. But most importantly, it’s a love letter to themselves and their strength. As you grow into your true self, take some time to reflect on how far you’ve come and how the things you’ve gone through helped shape you into who you are now. An honorary mention here goes to “I’m slowly filling my heart up with other things, my world’s getting colorful,” which reminds us of how healing it can be to try new things and pursue new dreams after being hurt.
“Even if I stumble, luck is always on my side…”
Towards the end of IVE EMPATHY, we arrive at the second title track and the first title track that Wonyoung has writing credits on! We think this confident ‘ATTITUDE’ lyric draws from Wonyoung’s viral Lucky Vicky mindset, which focuses on seeing the good in different situations and trusting that the universe knows what it’s doing. One of the best examples Wonyoung has given us of this attitude was in her vlog from Spain – someone in front of her bought the last pain au chocolat that she wanted to order, but then she got a freshly baked one as a result. The things you think are tearing you down might actually be working in your favor!
“Better watch out, baby, I bite…”
IVE EMPATHY comes to a fiery close with ‘TKO,’ a darker song for the ‘Baddie’ stans out there that even references ‘Baddie!’ It’s a true knockout of a track that shows off IVE’s fierce side with an exhilarating boxing theme. Between the rap line’s standout verse and the stunning vocals, there’s so much to love on this song and we had trouble narrowing it down to one line! In the end, though, we chose this one because it’s such a powerful mantra to remember your power. Don’t forget your bite or what makes you special, especially when people try to bring you down.
