Book Overview: Something Like Fate
Content Warnings: mention of parent death
Summary: For generations, the fortune-telling women in Lo Zhao-Jensen’s family have foreseen The One―the great loves of their lives―before ever meeting them. Except for Lo, who has zero psychic abilities. Just memories of old rom-coms and a lot of poor judgment when it comes to love.
Until now.
When Lo finally has the vision she’s been waiting for, her delighted aunties are convinced she’ll meet The One on her backpacking trip in Italy. Vero amore, here she comes.
Along for the summer is Lo’s best friend and confidant, Teller Owens, her opposite in every way. Upon arrival in Venice, Lo is saved from a runaway trolley by Caleb, a fellow backpacker. It’s a meet-cute so swoony, it has to be fate. But with each destination, Lo’s complicated feelings for Teller are becoming harder to ignore. From the cobblestone streets of Rome to the rocky cliffs of Amalfi, Lo begins to wonder if fate has other plans.
Best Friends To Lovers
First off, there are few things we love more than a best friends-to-lovers romance. Lo and Teller’s opposites-attract friendship works in their favor on their Italy trip, balancing the logical planning with spontaneous activities. Something Like Fate captures the yearning and mutual pining between Lo and Teller so well. We couldn’t hold in our reactions every time they shared an intimate moment. And we rode for Team Teller the whole time, unlike Lo’s family and best friend Bianca. (Sorry, Caleb.)
The Beautiful Backdrop Of Italy
We think every romantic has fantasized about traveling to Italy at least once in their lives. Because we sure have! Something Like Fate feeds into our fantasy by giving us even more locations to see and activities to do. Lo travels around Tuscany, Venice, and Florence with Teller and people they meet in their hostel. They do traditionally touristy things during the day, while Lo also gets to see hidden gems with Caleb on their late-night rendezvous. Italy feels like a dream, and it’s only getting higher on our travel bucket list!
Lo’s Self-Discovery
Another one of our favorite things about Something Like Fate is Lo’s personal journey, romance aside. She struggles with constantly feeling like a disappointment to everyone in her family. She didn’t have the same psychic powers until recently. And she doesn’t want to continue going to college and pursuing forensic science like her dad. But Lo realizes that everyone is allowed to change their paths or go against the norm. It may take time to determine what makes her happy, but she has her whole life ahead to figure it out.
A best friends’ backpacking trip. One month in Italy. And a choice between destined love and enduring love. Amy Lea’s Something Like Fate makes us feel all the feels and is truly something special.
