LUCY is continuously giving us some of the best K-pop music, pushing the boundaries with their unique sound, talent, and the irreplicable atmosphere they create. It’s been a constant since their debut, and with every release, they continue to one-up themselves, look for new sounds, yet stay true to themselves. 8 months after the release of FROM., WAJANGCHANG is a new exciting chapter in the story of LUCY, and here’s how every song is another masterpiece added to their discography!
The First Title Track: ‘Wakey Wakey’
The release of WAJANGCHANG was a bit different than usual. Indeed, the band released a first title track before the mini-album: ‘Wakey Wakey.’ It is the perfect embodiment of the bright, lively side of LUCY‘s sound. ‘Wakey Wakey’ is witty and catchy. Its infectious energy will have you listening to the song over and over. This is a type of sound that LUCY knows exactly how to manage and innovate – ‘Wakey Wakey’ is proof of it.
The Second Title Track: ‘Hippo’
‘Hippo,’ the second title track, was released along with the entire mini-album, and indeed, it’s a perfect song to represent the energy of WAJANGCHANG. With a bass that lures you in immediately, ‘Hippo’ is an unexpected track that never fails to amaze. LUCY‘s instrumentation has always been top-tier, but it keeps evolving and improving. Indeed, with every listen, you’ll discover a new detail in the witty instrumental of ‘Hippo.’ The pre-chorus is unexpected and striking and leads right into a very LUCY-like chorus with some of the best melodies we’ve heard from them. But nothing beats the jaw-dropping bridge with the upbeat violin solo. LUCY’s energy perfectly fits the fun and witty concept of the song and its lyrics. With their pop-fused sound, they create a narrative, a world, and a universe with ‘Hippo.’
The B-Sides
As much as LUCY always kills it with their title track, their b-sides hold an indescribable magic. ‘Pathetic Love’ is a prime example of LUCY‘s irreplicable sound, a jewel in WAJANGCHANG. The rock ballad hits right where it should, with striking melodies and chills-inducing vocals. ‘Pathetic Love’ has desperation and angst all over it, and the mixture of Sangyeop’s insane vocals with their top-tier instrumental skills makes this the perfect song to be the soundtrack of your darkest days. This song instantly creates an atmosphere that makes you feel like in a movie – that’s the power LUCY holds with their music. And this is why they’re so good at OSTs.
The impact of LUCY‘s talent and vision on their music is something we find in songs like ‘Outsider,’ too. While ‘Outsider’ brings the energy back up with its bright sound, the song, real to its title, touches on feeling uneasy and like you don’t belong. With its relatable lyrics and the vulnerability they showcase, ‘Outsider’ has a cathartic feeling to it. The best thing about the song, though, is the instrumental – because, yes, it somehow gets better than ‘Hippo.’ The outro is absolute madness and genius, proving why everyone should listen to LUCY.
As LUCY creates a world within the mini-album, ‘Why you hate…’ is a beautiful soft ballad that feels like a breath of fresh air. It’s a bittersweet song about accepting the pain of an experience and feeling thankful for every moment. ‘Why you hate…’ simply feels like a hug, a light, as it builds from a darker song to a brighter one, full of hope. WAJANGCHANG comes to an end with ‘bleu,’ a song that could perfectly fit in LUCY’s 2021 mini-album, BLUE. It serves as a beautiful wrap-up to the mini-album. ‘bleu’ is magical with its gorgeous instrumental and comforting melodies. Full of hope and vulnerability, ‘bleu’ feels like a new beginning for both the band and anyone who would need it.
WAJANGCHANG is yet another proof of how LUCY move forward with their sound and bring something unique and special to the scene and our playlists. They never fail when it comes to their mini-albums and WACHANGJANG creates a unique atmosphere so proper to them yet new and refreshing. It’s as simple as this: LUCY’s music keeps getting better with every release.
