If you don’t think BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUT are one of the hottest bands on the rock scene right now, then ‘FEVER’ will definitely change your mind. It’s a party-ready jam about the excitement of falling for someone, perfect for all your adrenaline-filled summer nights and hype-up playlists! We’re so beyond jealous of anyone who’s gonna get to see this live when BSD play Idobi Radio Summer School Tour and Warped Tour this summer, because we already know it’s gonna go off during their sets.
We know that the BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUT ‘FEVER’ will definitely spread throughout alt fans as much as it has in our hive! Side effects include headbanging, dancing, and listening to nothing but BSD… but we’re not complaining. We’re buzzing to share that the band dropped in to chat with us all about ‘FEVER,’ their upcoming WHERE DID ALL THE BUTTERFLIES GO? album, and so much more. Press play on the song below to jam out while you read our exclusive interview!
Hey BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUT, congrats on the release of ‘FEVER!’ What does the song mean to you?
Colie: Thank you! ‘FEVER’ to me is all about being drunk off chemistry. When you have such a strong connection with someone that you both feel invincible.
There are so many lyrics on ‘FEVER’ that we love, with one of our favorites being “take me for a spin, I’m not afraid of vertigo.” Is there a certain line you’re especially proud of?
Colie: Lyrically, there are so many puns & tongue-in-cheek moments but I think I’m with you, “take me for a spin, I’m not afraid of vertigo” seems to be connecting with a lot of people.
You’ve said that your previous single ‘ON YOUR LIPS’ is the perfect song to listen to “at parties, [on] late night drives, and all the cinematic moments you wish you had a score for in life.” What do you listen to when you want to feel more alive?
Colie: When I want to feel more alive I put ‘FEVER’ on. Like, actually. That was the whole point of writing the song in the first place. To capture THAT energy.
We’re so excited to hear your new album this September! Is there a certain song you’re most excited for your fans to check out and welcome into their lives?
Colie: Thank you!! ‘Madonna’ is an exciting one for us because it has such a different pace and sound than anything we have made before.
Speaking of the new album, you’ve hidden some song titles in places like your Spotify bio for Dropouts to find! How did the digital scavenger hunt idea come about?
Colie: I love that you picked up on that! We really just wanted to keep our core fans excited and engaged with what is to come. They do such a good job of finding all the Easter eggs so we figured we may as well give them an Easter egg hunt.
2025 marks five years since you debuted with ‘Last Time!’ What are some of your all-time favorite memories you’ve made over the past few years as a band?
Colie: The list goes on but I think all our favorite memories have come from being on the road together. We have been so blessed to tour with some of our biggest childhood influences. Playing to a sold-out Madison Square Garden with Blink-182 and Turnstile will forever go down as a top moment in our lore.
Inspired by the title of your WE MADE PLANS & GOD LAUGHED project, has there been a time when something you were working on didn’t go according to plan? How did you adapt and make the most of the situation?
Colie: All the time. One example, if we are being vulnerable, is Ready to Eat. That was the first project we put out where it felt like our trajectory didn’t keep climbing upwards in terms of new reach. Not to say that is what it’s all about, but we definitely had high hopes for that project especially after such a big year of touring, so that was pretty humbling to say the least. BUT, it made us self-reflect on all the things we could have done better creatively and through that, we chose to take our time and be super deliberate with the creation of this new album coming out in September. Whether it hits or not, this is by far our proudest work as creatives and that is an exciting feeling.
Colie, you’ve been very passionate about the business side of the music industry, telling Melodic Mag that “a lot of people forget that there are two parts to the phrase ‘music business.’” We love the broader vision you have! How do you feel your drive for the business side has helped BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUT make waves over the years?
Colie: I think more than anything it has pushed us to be as creative as possible in making opportunities for ourselves. A lot of peers see that we have had such perseverance in our business decisions and oftentimes come to us for advice. We are always big advocates of playing the long game and doing anything possible to prevent the machine from taking advantage of the artist.
You’ve worked with modern rock legends Mark Hoppus and Pete Wentz, which must feel so surreal! What’s been the biggest thing you’ve learned from them as mentors?
Colie: It is surreal! More than anything, they continue to remind/teach us how to be authentically ourselves. They always challenge us to be as uncompromising as possible, which is rare from a label and I love that.
Bardo, you’ve also worked with people like Dasha and Royal & The Serpent as a producer! How has working with so many other talented artists influenced how you approach working with BSD?
Bardo: It’s kinda like being a double agent. It’s cool to be able to help another artist bring their vision to life and I find myself getting inspired by their process because it’s often so different from ours. I can go back to our own sessions with fresh ideas and perspectives just based on seeing how someone else creates.
Beepus, you also design merch and shared some designs for artists like BSD and jxdn on Instagram! What inspires you when you’re designing?
BEEPUS: Truthfully, everything. My phone is a wasteland of inspiration from photos of things I’ve seen IRL, Pinterest, Tumblr, magazines, art books, etc. I’m just obsessed with looking at good typography and art. The more places I can pull from, the more proud I am of the graphics I make.
From your shows to your Discord server, you’ve created such a wonderful connection with your fans! What has it meant to you to be so close with your listeners and make so many cool memories together?
Colie: It’s pretty unbelievable. This whole project has been founded on community and giving back to our fanbase, so to see it grow and sustain itself, let alone allow so many other people to foster new relationships and memories with each other, has been nothing short of rewarding.
You have some pretty epic summer plans ahead of you, between the album release and playing shows on the Idobi Radio Summer School Tour and Warped Tour! How are you preparing for your upcoming shows? Do you have any other fun summer plans or bucket list items for this year?
We just announced some new tour dates on the road with blink-182 again as well as letlive. which is a huge honor for us. We are just looking forward to being on the road again and being able to play all this new music. That is the bucket list item of the year.
Is there anything else you’d like to mention or say to your fans that the questions didn’t touch on?
To the Dropouts, we love you guys so much. We can’t wait for you to have this new music in your hands. The shows are going to be crazier than ever. Thank you for riding with us. <3
