Friday, February 13th was a big day for Charli xcx. She ushered out two new, and very pivotal, artistic projects. The Moment, a film made by A24 starring Charli and friends, and Wuthering Heights, a 12-track album released in partnership with the new film of the same name. We just happened to see The Moment and listen to Wuthering Heights on the same night. Here’s what we thought about each project.

The Moment—Is brat Summer Really Over?
*This section contains spoilers for the movie, The Moment*
When we walked out of the movie theater, we still didn’t really have a concrete answer to the question: is brat summer really over? We’d like to think that, yes, the traditional album cycle for Charli xcx’s 2024 hit dance pop album brat is over and done. The album was released and had smashing success globally. Charli went on tour, performed at Coachella, and now has millions more new fans to her name. That’s the goal of an album…right?
A24’s film, The Moment, gives us a glimpse into what Charli xcx actually thinks about it. She stars in the film directed by Aiden Zamiri, and it’s about, essentially, herself. A broad look at the film would say that it’s a funny yet darker look at fame and stardom. What is the mental cost of having so many people around you all the time, staring in adoration (but who don’t actually care about your opinion)? Is your artwork really your own when you’re signed to a label? What does the pressure of making a profit, while also trying to please fans, look and feel like? Overall, we think Charli did an amazing job telling this story through her own lens, using the commercial success of brat as the driving vehicle.
Here’s what Charli xcx wants us to know—brat summer is over. BUT WAIT. Don’t be too sad about it. We can still bump ‘360’ and ‘i might say something stupid’ all day long for the rest of our days. But we can also accept a new era of music and artistry with open arms, the same way we did when brat first released. The Moment tells us that sometimes it’s okay to let the things you love the most go and make way for something new. brat will forever define a generation of young music lovers, and as long-time Charli xcx fans, we’ll hold onto that slime green color forever.
Wuthering Heights—A New Era Has Begun
As The Moment ends, Wuthering Heights begins. Yes, the movie and the album (we may or may not have done a double feature on Valentine’s Day). However, don’t get the movie, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, confused with the album, made by Charli xcx. The two beautifully co-exist with each other, but Charli’s album is an intense piece of art that stands out on its own. Learn more about the new album here.
In our opinion, ‘Always Everywhere’ drew us instantly into the album. The almost goth, organ-heavy production and tone of the song take us directly into the modern world of the Wuthering Heights movie. The visuals in the new music video ring in a new era for Charli, erasing the slime green and ushering in a darker mood—deep reds, blacks, forest greens, and neutrals. Even though we could live in brat summer forever, we’re ready to move on with Charli, and open our ears to her new era. Clearly, Wuthering Heights is The Moment, and we should all be listening at full volume.
So, with all that said, have you had a chance to deep-dive into Charli xcx‘s new artistic world? If not, this is your sign to take yourself out on a solo movie date to see The Moment and then immediately listen to Wuthering Heights on the car ride home.
