The last time Sabrina Carpenter played Coachella, she had just released ‘Espresso’ and was ready to take over everyone’s playlists for the summer. So when she announced she’d be a headliner this year, we knew that pop her-story was in the making! And we don’t have any regrets for the expectations we set, because she totally blew us away when she took the stage.
Sabrina started off with an Old Hollywood-inspired intro that saw her heading to California and sitting in a drive-in movie theater before deciding to take the leap to become a star herself. She strutted down a runway inspired by the Walk Of Fame before launching into ‘House Tour’ on a set recreating the Hollywood Hills. We head to an acting casting during ‘Taste’ then she christens the city as Sabrinawood when her very own sign pops up during ‘When Did You Get Hot?.’ ‘Please Please Please’ whisks us into a retro recording studio and Sabrina deals with heartbreak on the city streets, then Susan Sarandon plays Sabrina’s older self offering a little reflection about her younger years and the downsides of stardom in the same drive-in from the show’s start.
The next song, ‘Go Go Juice,’ places Sabrina in a dance class and she perfectly illustrates the push-and-pull of an unhealthy relationship with a fellow student throughout ‘Sugar Talking,’ chasing each other and twirling around the dance studio. She returns to the Walk Of Fame for a more intimate moment with the crowd, surrounded by phone flashlights as she sings on a park bench. She even runs along the barricade of that crowd at the end of ‘Don’t Smile!’
With the love from her fans, our Hollywood heroine gets some strength back and returns to the main stage for a glamorous take on ‘Feather’ that’s later revealed to be her big starring moment on a movie set. But there’s a bit of a technical difficulty after ‘Bed Chem,’ and Will Ferrell comes out of the runway to try to fix it for Sabrina’s big premiere. She makes her grand entrance with ‘Juno’ and keeps the party going with ‘Espresso’ before we head back to the drive-in with ‘Goodbye’ and ‘Tears.’ After the cars become fountains that take everyone by surprise, Sabrina drives through the crowd to wave goodbye while credits spotlighting her dancers, band, and crew roll on the screens.
Grab your ‘Go Go Juice’ and go-go boots for a good time with Sabrina! We absolutely loved the Hollywood theme of her performance, paying homage to her experiences in the industry and finding her stride in both acting and music.
