Alt-pop trio Moody Joody has been steadily gaining momentum since their latest single ‘Loretta’s Last Call’ landed them on several major playlists. Of course, their journey did not begin there. Their debut EP, Dream Girl, is, as the name suggests, dreamy. With hits like ‘Ground Control’ and ‘Velvet Connection,’ they marked themselves as a name to keep our eyes on. And after their recent stint on tour with The Maine, we can confirm their live performance is just as dazzling as their recorded releases.
With a bit of nostalgia in their music, each song feels like a different part of a night out. The highs, the lows, the getting dressed in your best outfit, the stumbling home in the middle of the night. It’s all reflected in Moody Joody’s music. As they gear up to release their debut album later this year, we feel it’s our duty to share them with you. So, including their latest release, we’ve rounded up five of our favorite songs by Moody Joody that you must check out.
‘Loretta’s Last Call’
If Moody Joody songs are a night out, ‘Loretta’s Last Call’ is, of course, the end of the night. Sitting in the corner of a dive bar, or maybe you’re fast-food place of choice to end the night, and you’re getting emotional thinking about something you’d rather forget. And it’s kind of cinematic because you’re in your best outfit, and maybe you’re covered in glitter, but you also wish this one person were here. And of course, they can’t be, so you’ll settle for wishing you could call. Perhaps not the most thrilling of experiences, but Moody Joody manages to make the yearning a bit more bearable. Between the shimmering guitars and the, if you’ll excuse our use of the word, moody tone, they capture the duality of a sad night out.
‘L.A. Anyway’
Another one about yearning, but this one is about missing someone before they’re even gone. It’s about separate dreams pulling two people in opposite directions. And even though you know it’s better for both of you, you can still be upset about it. At least for four minutes in song. This one is also older. With a 2021 release, it’s proof that Moody Joody has been on the grind for a while. And if we have anything to say about it, it will all pay off.
‘Ground Control’
‘Ground Control’ is the opener to the Dream Girl EP. And we don’t think a stronger opener was possible. We know all of you have needed a good crash-out song at some point. This one is for when everything seems to be going wrong. When all you need is one minor inconvenience to set you over the edge. But maybe what you need is to put on an upbeat song and dance about it. Despite the hopeless lyrics, the synth-pop, energetic sound reminds us that we can overcome this particular crashout.
‘Talk Me Down’
‘Talk Me Down’ once again shows Moody Joody’s ability to make the best of a bad situation. Though they might be miserable, they’re going to make a killer song over it. So if you’ve ever needed someone to talk you out of something, this song is for you. And we’ve intentionally made that sound vague. You can’t tell us you’ve never been tempted to make a bad decision or needed a friend to distract you from thinking about someone. But at least you can listen to this catchy chorus and be glad someone was there to talk you down. Hopefully.
‘Little Blue House’
With their latest release, they are making it clear that they are only getting better. For Moody Joody, the little blue house represents rebellion, self-confidence, and self-expression. Co-lead vocalist and guitarist Kaitie Forbes explained that the song is about a curiosity for life, and a yearning for more. In ‘Little Blue House,’ they recognize life for everything it can be, and everything they want it to be.
“This song evokes the nostalgic feeling for me of a day of riding bikes with friends in the cul-de-sac, daydreaming about what’s going on in the neighbors’ house, and then laying on the bedroom floor pressing play on a silver boombox with an LFO CD. ‘Little Blue House’ feels like something completely different than anything we’ve put out thus far and is a little Easter egg towards our album!”
Kayla Hall, co-lead vocalist/synth player
As Moody Joody captures life in all its forms, it feels like a time capsule. A peek into what it’s like to be young, to make mistakes, and to agonize over things you wish you could forget. The dream-like quality of their music makes it feel like a memory. And it’s one we can look back on any time we want. One that will only get stronger with their upcoming debut album.
We hope that we’ve gotten you sufficiently excited for the album. But in the meantime, you have ‘Little Blue House’ and at least four more songs to stream. Check them out and let us know your favorite song! We’d love to chat about Moody Joody at @thehoneypop on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
