Your playlist is missing something. Trust us! And lucky for you, we know just the artist you’re missing out on! It’s girli! girli’s album, it’s just my opinion, came out earlier this year and made us lifelong fans! From ‘Pedestal’ to ‘Lifestyle,’ we haven’t been able to get enough of this record. We got to chat with girli all about this record and so much more! Let’s dive in!
Listen to it’s just my opinion here!
Hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us! Before we jump in, can you tell our readers a bit about who you are as an artist?
Hi! I’m girli, I make opinionated pop music. I write very honest songs about lots of topics, including queer identity, heartbreak, my mental health struggles, family dynamics, feminine rage, and politics. I’ve been releasing music for 10 years and over the years I’ve built a fanbase that feels like a community.
Your third album, it’s just my opinion, is just days away! What are the emotions that you feel leading up to this release?
I felt really nervous when I announced the album! The classic trepidation of questioning yourself and the project as soon as it’s exposed to the world, but now I feel so proud of it and elated that it’s out in the world.
And on a similar wavelength, as you release more full-body projects, how do the emotions leading up to a release change?
It’s funny because I think the word “release” has a double meaning here – when you release a song into the world, there’s a mental and emotional release too. Something you’ve worked on for so long and have hyped up to your fans is finally out and you have to find a way to be proud and positive about it regardless of its critical or commercial reception. Separating art from capitalism is hard but so necessary for every artist’s sanity.
‘Better Undressed’ was our first taste of this album, what was it about that song in particular that made you want to have that be the first snippet fans got?
I have no idea – lol! It was finished before the other songs on the album, and I was impatient to release music. There was no more thought behind it than that!
Making an album takes a village, and it’s often so easy to find time to thank the other people involved and recognize their contributions, but it can be harder to pat yourself on the back. What is something that you personally accomplished during the cycle of crafting this album that you want to pat yourself on the back for?
I accomplished some pretty amazing accolades during this album cycle, but I’m actually proudest of what I accomplished with my mindset. I have spent so much time in the music industry doubting myself and feeling like a failure and have let those negative emotions eclipse the joy in making art and sharing it with my fans. This album, I made a promise to myself to shift my attitude and enjoy the process, and I really did!
We know you are heading out on the road this summer! Is there a particular song off of this album that you are most looking forward to seeing come alive on stage?
I am so excited to scream ‘Slap on the Wrist’ live with audiences. That song is so full of rage, it’s going to feel like such a release to belt it!
If any of our readers are going to be listening to your music for the first time, what is one song that you would tell them to listen to first? Something that you think really sums up the kind of music you make, and who you are as an artist?
I think it would be ‘Slap on the Wrist,’ or ‘Matriarchy!’ They are my boldest songs, full of take-it-or-leave-it opinions, rage, and joy.
Once again, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us! Before we let you go, can you leave us with a lyric that has been really sitting with you from this album?
“I shouldn’t put you on a pedestal. I shouldn’t listen to you talking like some kind of New Age oracle.”
