The existential dancefloor anthem of the summer is officially here thanks to Lilyisthatyou and ‘EMPTY UNIVERSE!’ Lily always manages to balance confidence and vulnerability in such a beautiful way in her work, and ‘EMPTY UNIVERSE’ is the perfect example. She wrote the song after talking with some friends about whether life truly has meaning, specifically playing with that idea through the lens of relationships – she shares via press release, “It’s about wanting someone to prove you matter to them while knowing you can survive without that validation.”
Her vocals reflect the waxing and waning confidence of the lyrics incredibly – let’s take a look at the pre-chorus. Lily flips between a stronger, almost nonchalant chest voice (“I like whisky, living life with no regrets / Got tattoos on both my hands…” and “I like cigarettes, let me get another pack / You know that I hate myself”) and her softer head register (“but you don’t love me like that”) as the lyrics fluctuate between her bold outlook on life and the deeper fears that hide beneath it. She knows she’ll be okay even if life or their relationship seem meaningless, but she lets herself feel the sadness that may come with that.
Given the existential themes of the song and the conversation that inspired it, you’d think that the key chorus lyric of “Show me that I matter, it doesn’t really matter” would take on a more somber feeling, questioning whether life itself matters. But paired with the euphoric production and the switches in Lily’s voice, it comes off as a command, then a quick dismissal as she accepts that her own validation and opinion of herself is what really matters.
