Def.’s First Full Length Album Is Officially Here: [2018.12.25]

We’re pretty sure Lim Jaebeom woke up one day a while ago and decided he was going to bring his alter ego Def. back with the sole purpose of making us sob our way through his first full length album, [2018.12.25]. Filled with emotionally heavy songs, the album is a snapshot of a very hard time in his life. In the “About” section inside the album, he goes into the reasoning behind the name of this new album.

This story begins on December 25, 2018.
One day in 2018, while sitting in a stopped car, my chest suddenly felt suffocated for no reason.
It was an ordinary day, no different from usual, but that day, my emotions were different.
I don’t remember exactly, but I think emotions like anxiety, anger, and a sense of being wronged all came rushing in at once.

The Album

Through every lyric and melody in [2018.12.25], we can feel all of those emotions he was going through. As it’s usually the case whenever Jaebeom releases music as Def., this project feels much more personal and introspective, diving deep into themes like love and personal identity in a completely different way from what we’re used to seeing.

From ‘Intro’ all the way to ‘COLd,’ Def. wrote, composed, and arranged every one of the nine tracks present in [2018.12.25], making it clear just how personal of a project this was. Which makes it that much more special in our opinion.

‘BoY’

The title track for [2018.12.25] had our eyes full of tears and our jaws on the floor! ‘BoY’ paints a picture of anxiety and desperation of feeling like a lost child in the middle of a bad situation. Opening the chorus with “Like a boy, I cry” was certainly the right way to go if Def. wanted to make us super emotional.

Feeling lost like a child is something we can all relate to at different points in our journeys. It feels comforting to know an artist we love and admire as much as Def. understands that feeling, and beyond that, has written a song about it. We couldn’t be more proud of him for that.

Another track we feel deserves a little highlight is ‘cITY,’ which we knew would be one of our faves since the track list dropped a while back. We just had a feeling, you know? The image of being alone and at the same time not having time to feel lonely resonated deeply with us. Even the melody and production of the song evoke this strange feeling and invite us to feel exactly how Def. was feeling when he wrote ‘cITY.’

We love it when Jaebeom brings Def. back for a new project because it usually means we’re getting more R&B, more personal lyrics, and more hands-on involvement in the production side of things. We get to see a different side of our beloved GOT7 leader from what we see in his other projects. And we always love to see what else he comes up with to explore his artistry in new ways.
