What do you mean it’s been seven years since GOT7 gave us Spinning Top: Between Security & Insecurity? Where did the time go? We probably don’t feel the time passing because we still listen to this album constantly whenever we need a pick-me-up.
With six beautiful songs and a runtime of only 20 minutes, Spinning Top: Between Security & Insecurity is a journey from starting to feel the anxiety looming over us with ‘1°’ all the way to making it out on the other side with ‘Page,’ which happens to be a personal fave of ours. The title track, ‘Eclipse,’ was written by Jay B and talks about the anxiety of potentially not being able to protect those we love. To think that was written with uncertainty for the group’s future and now we can see how far they came while still being together. The third song, ‘The End,’ is one of our favorite Jinyoung songs, touching on the anxiety and sadness at the end of an important relationship (and yes, he’s very much talking about GOT7 in this song.)
And in a way, that also reflects our relationship with the album as well. When it first came out, we were also worried about our future. Having Spinning Top: Between Security & Insecurity gave us a sense of comfort when we needed it the most. Now, looking back seven years later, it feels like meeting a friend and still feeling as safe as always in their presence. We may be more at peace and less anxious, but having these six songs to listen back to whenever we need is definitely one of the best feelings we could ask for.
If the first half of the album is about how even a ‘1°’ inclination can make things unstable, the second half is the turning point, it’s the return to the light. ‘Time Out,’ which Youngjae co-wrote, is an invitation to take a break and move away from the negative thoughts. After that comes BamBam’s ‘Believe,’ where he asks for support in order to find the light again, a gentle reminder that everyone needs a hand to help get back up. And finally, we end with ‘Page,’ written by Jay B inspired by an old diary entry where he talked about people he cared about. We consider this the perfect ending to the album, as it almost narrates exactly what GOT7 went on to do during the following seven years: connect with people, write beautiful stories and staying together.
Even the album cover tells a story. By dividing it in two halves, we have a visual representation of the album themes. On the upper half, we have a standing spinning top in a white background, representing security. On the lower half, the spinning top is tilted on a dark background, bringing a sense of insecurity and darkness that must be overcome.
All of this to say Spinning Top is one of our all time favorite K-Pop albums and we’re still processing the fact that it’s been this long since we first heard it. It’s truly special that GOT7 has been giving us music like this for so long, and we always love to go back to it and see not only it still holds up, but it also reflects who they are now.
