Journal Prompts For Fans of Taylor Bickett’s ‘I Like Mondays’

Taylor Bickett is single-handedly making us appreciate the dreaded first day of the week with her song ‘I Like Mondays.’ Because yes, Monday is the day we have to drag ourselves out of bed way too early. But as Taylor pointed out, it’s also a chance to start fresh.

It’s no secret that we love ‘I Like Mondays.’ Taylor managed to make us look at New Year’s, Mondays, and first of the months in a completely different light. They all act as blank slates. As Taylor puts it, “The moment’s never been touched. I like knowing there’s something I haven’t messed up.”

Taylor then goes on to sing about her simultaneous desire for and fear of the future. What we’re hearing is that she needs to focus more on the present. And the music video features Taylor writing in her little notebook at her desk, on the stairs, and on a couch. So we decided to come up with some journal prompts to get you thinking about Taylor’s themes.

Write About the Present

One of the easiest ways to journal can be just talking about your day! If you, like Taylor, are “terrified the present will not last,” this might help. That way, you can relive your past days in as much detail as you want. Some specific prompts to think about could be the most exciting thing that happened that day. Or a challenge you overcame. Maybe something new you tried that day, and whether you’d do it again. There’s a lot you can say about one day, and you can write for as long as you want!

Preparing for the Future

Though it sounds overly simple, feeling prepared for the future may help you feel less afraid of it. Or help you to live in the present rather than rushing towards the future. Maybe you’re unsatisfied with your life and are more excited by the idea of what could happen in the future. If that’s the case, you could write about your hopes or goals for the future. And then you could come up with more specific goals to help you get to your ideal future. Then you’ll have something to focus on right now, rather than getting stuck on the idea of your future.

You can consider writing about any challenges you may be facing right now, and then writing about the best-case solution you can come up with. And then go backward from there to come up with steps to get there. It may be more difficult than it sounds, but writing about your future like this may help you focus on the present.

Write About Yourself

This song very well might have started as a journal, given how personal it seems to be. Taylor sings about what she’s working on in her own life. She talks about her own struggles, and how she is “trying to be kinder to this body of mine.” Even if you’re not a songwriter, you can do the same thing! Just to put your thoughts down on paper might make them easier to sort through, even if no one ever hears them.

You can write about personal goals, too. Taylor sings about how she drinks caffeine even though she said she never would. Drinking less caffeine would be a great goal. It certainly doesn’t have to be life-changing. Maybe you’re in school and your goal is just to go to all your classes for the week. Not that we’re speaking from experience or anything…
