Summary: After living through a dumpster fire of a Valentine’s Day, Emilie Hornby escapes to her grandmother’s house for some comfort and a consolation pint of Ben & Jerry’s. She passes out on the couch, but when she wakes up, she’s back home in her own bed—and it’s Valentine’s Day all over again. And the next day? Another nightmare V-Day.

Emilie is stuck in some sort of time loop nightmare that she can’t wake up from as she re-watches her boyfriend, Josh, cheat on her day after day. In addition to Josh’s recurring infidelity, Emilie can’t get away from the enigmatic Nick, who she keeps running into—sometimes literally—in unfortunate ways.

How many days can one girl passively watch her life go up in flames? And when something good starts to come out of these terrible days, what happens when the universe stops doling out do-overs?

Our Review

The Do-Over does not disappoint when it comes to romantic vibes! We couldn’t get enough of the banter between Emilie and Nick! They had so many cute romantic moments that we were constantly swooning. The idea of a repeating Valentine’s Day was also a lot of fun to read about. Seeing Emilie’s character growth throughout her repeating days was intriguing. We were rooting for her every step of the way and just had to keep reading to see what would happen next. We enjoyed that the book also focused on other aspects of Emilie’s life, like her relationships with her parents. The writing style was super addictive and kept us on the edge of our seats. We also can’t forget to mention the Ferris Bueller-esque vibes of some scenes that added to the light-hearted aspects of the book. We also appreciated the more emotional and serious aspects of The Do-Over and found that they created a great balance with the sweet romance. Our only critique is that we wish the book was longer so we could spend more time with the side characters and learn more about them. Speaking of side characters, we loved Emilie’s friend group! They were very supportive and relatable.
