Disagree if you’d like, but in our opinion, Dermot Kennedy is one of our generation’s most beautiful and powerful voices. That is in fact the hill we’re dying on and you can just deal with it because we’re correct. He’s incredibly talented and incredibly underrated. He’s currently on The Sonder Tour, which is wrapping up its North American dates this month, and will head internationally after that. In the middle of touring, he’s gifted us with the brand new track ‘Don’t Forget Me.’
One of our favorite things about Dermot Kennedy’s music is his powerful lyricism. Every song he writes is imbued with raw emotion and you can hear it not only in his composition but in the way he sings as well. ‘Don’t Forget Me’ is just another example of Dermot’s talent.
Lately I’ve been living in a dream
The past feels like a better place to be
The days we spent just sitting by the sea
Empyrean skies can’t compete with those eyes
I get this feeling like I’m fading from your memory
So I wrote this song and called it Don’t Forget Me
Every time you hear it will you smile (Smile)
And tell the one you’re with I was that guy? (Guy)
The “empyrean skies” line is actually one of our favorites, both for the way he sings it and for the use of the word empyrean. Comparing someone’s eyes to the highest of heavenly skies is just about one of the most romantic things we can think of. ‘Don’t Forget Me’ is a plea to a past lover to not forget the memories and you can hear Dermot’s plea in the way he sings the song. The emotions translate so beautifully through his vocals and the fact that the ‘Don’t Forget Me (Live From Soundcheck)’ version of this track sounds basically the same as the studio version is a testament to his talent.
Prior to ‘Don’t Forget Me,’ Dermot lent his voice to the Fast X soundtrack, on ‘Won’t Back Down’ which is featured in the end credits of the movie. We’d recognize that voice anywhere.
