Whilst their trip to London was short and sweet, State Champs managed to pack in plenty of iconic moments for us. They played the Download festival and then headlined the O2 Academy Islington, selling it out and packing it to the brim!
Luckily for us, it’s second nature to be at pop-punk gigs, screaming every lyric and being packed into a venue. State Champs fans were all very clearly there for a good time, the energy was off the charts. Despite it being the hottest day of the year so far in the UK, everyone brought the most electric, high-energy versions of themselves.
Derek, Ryan, Evan, and Tyler all manage to blow London’s mind every time they perform. From older certified bangers like ‘Elevated’ through to Kings of the New Age anthems like ‘Sundress,’ every song was an absolute hit with the crowd. It was everything we could have wished for after their long-awaited return.
State Champs have managed to capture the essence of pop-punk and keep it alive. Every stereotype that comes to mind when you think of the genre, State Champs will fit it perfectly. It’s a good thing, of course, where would pop-punk be without this band? And if you need the perfect acoustic hit, ‘If I’m Lucky’ will tick every box.
The venue has a strict “no crowd surfing” rule, well, we’re not actually sure how strict it is. But as you can imagine, no one took it seriously. From ‘Just Sound’ opening the show, there were crowd surfers left, right, and center. It was wild! State Champs have always had a great interactive relationship with their crowds, and to watch their faces light up when people sing their songs is always a sight to see.
London has always welcomed State Champs with open arms, and we hope they return again sooner rather than later. Maybe if we’re lucky, they’ll stay for a while.
