Lavigne Legacy: Celebrating The Queen Of Pop-Punk

The early 2000s were filled with the sounds of Avril Lavigne. Dark eye makeup, skater shoes, and her signature tie: Avril was so cool. If you ask us, she still is. We love Avril here at the Honey POP, and we appreciate the impact she’s made on music and especially the pop-punk scene. Take a deep dive with us into some of her greatest hits and the legacy of Avril Lavigne: the Queen of pop-punk!

‘Complicated’

Her first single put us on the map and gave Millennials one of their ultimate catchphrases. We don’t know one millennial who doesn’t burst into song whenever they hear the word complicated. She perfectly combined teenage angst with the happiness and innocence of hanging out at the mall, creating a catchy, be true to yourself anthem (and the perfect karaoke song!)

‘Sk8er Boi’

We can’t think of another line that is as timeless as, “He was punk. She did ballet. What more can I say?” A Romeo and Juliet song for the complicated (pun intended) youth of 2002, Avril gave us a love story we’ve never been able to forget. Proving girls really can rock. Avril is a pioneer and inspired us all to express ourselves…whether we’re a punk or a ballerina!

‘My Happy Ending’

Yes, that’s right. She gave us heartbreak anthems. Actually, Avril’s heartbreak songs are still some of the gutwrenching we’ve heard even after all these years. A masterful lyricist, she digs deep into her emotions and wears her heart on her sleeve. For a lot of us, ‘My Happy Ending’ got us through our first breakups and takes us back when we listen to it now.

‘Girlfriend’

We don’t exaggerate when we say ‘Girlfriend’ was a cultural reset. This video was (and still is) iconic! Before we said, “You belong with me,” we were screaming: “Hey hey, you you. I don’t like your girlfriend. No way, no way I think you need a new one.” Bonus points if you changed this to your Myspace profile song whenever you wanted to send a subtle message to your crush. The OG subtweet!

‘Wish You Were Here’

Talk about a tear-jerker. ‘Wish You Were Here’ is one of those songs that tears you up inside. We’d call it a great cry-in-the-shower song. A lot of us can relate to the idea of being tough and strong on the outside or even brave in the face of adversity, but still feeling fragile on the inside. She may hide behind the walls, but she’s aching for someone to break it down. And when they do, losing them is a tragedy.

‘Here’s To Never Growing Up’

Growing up is overrated, trust us! Sometimes, we wish we could still be young forever. Avril can relate! She reminds us that no matter how old we get, that doesn’t mean our spirits have to be. We can still sing our favorite songs at the top of our lungs. We can still go out and enjoy ourselves. We can still live life. Just because we’re getting older doesn’t mean we have to grow up.

‘Head Above Water’

Once again showcasing her incredible depth and heart, ‘Head Above Water’ is all about staying calm and persevering. When life gets tough we have to remember that we’re tougher and that the key to keep going is to just keep breathing.

‘I’m A Mess’ (with YUNGBLUD)

If you haven’t muttered the words, “I’m a mess.” to yourself at least once in your life, we can not relate to you. Life is messy. That’s a fact. It’s inevitable. There are going to be times when you feel you’re completely falling apart. But maybe, if you’re lucky, you’ll meet that special someone who makes you feel like you can pull it all together.
