Wanna meet the new shining princess of K-Pop? ‘C’mon,’ we’re about to tell you all about her! JINI has officially made her solo debut with An Iron Hand In A Velvet Glove, and this mini-album is everything we could’ve possibly dreamed of for her return. It brings back the JINI we love while also showing us fresh new sides of her talent and view as an artist, proving she’s one soloist who will undoubtedly make it to the top.
We’ve known JINI would be one of the biggest names in K-Pop ever since her initial debut in February 2022, but now’s the time for everyone to take more notice of her skills. And that includes you, honeybees, so let’s dive right into what makes An Iron Hand In A Velvet Glove such a special release!
Our first thought when we pressed play on ‘Here We Go Again’ and started listening to this EP: “Oh, she’s taking it.” The project kicks off on such a high note, full of confidence and optimism for a new path no matter how hard things may seem or what others might have to say about it. The title is also a cute nod to the fact that we’re getting to see JINI debut again and return to the spotlight!
The second song on the mini-album is the title track ‘C’mon,’ a sunny anthem comparing a relationship to music, featuring the one and only Aminé. It really showcases the different sides of JINI, between the more confident “c’mon, c’mon, c’mon” hook and the ethereal “la, la, la, la, la, la, la” post-chorus. We also think it was smart to have the song in English with an artist who’s found so much success internationally, since it will help JINI reach a wide audience right from her first release. Next stop, playlists all over the world!
The music video is just as exciting, putting a unique twist on the schoolgirl concept that’s been so popular in K-Pop. JINI dances in the gym, peeks into a locker full of animated creatures, and serves up some incredible fashion that we haven’t stopped thinking about.
If SEULGI and Dua Lipa released a collab, we think it’d sound something like ‘Dancing With The Devil!’ This track has such a cool sound and an interesting story, with JINI comparing an all-encompassing relationship to dancing with the devil himself. “Caught in the middle between heaven and hell,” she describes. But if we had to pick, we’d say this song is heaven!
Our one single complaint about this mini-album is that ‘Bad Reputation’ is under two minutes – it’s already one of our favorite K-Pop songs of the year, we wish it was longer! With writing credits from JINI herself, the amazing MNEK, and more, it was destined to be a total hit. “I’ve got a bad reputation with love, I love too little or a little too much… but there’s no way I’m messing this up,” JINI promises. It’s just further proof that there’s no way she’ll mess up in her music!
