Songs We Hope To Hear At The Strange 80s Sideshow

The weekend all of us emos have been waiting for, for over a year now is finally almost here: When We Were Young Fest weekend! We’re so stoked to see some of the most iconic emo bands that shaped our adolescence. But the festival itself isn’t the only event happening this weekend. We’re also super excited for Charity Bomb’s Strange 80s sideshow at Brooklyn Bowl on Friday! Not only do we get an amazing show, but all proceeds go to Charity Bomb and Unite The United. W’s all around! Here are songs we hope to hear at this When We Were Young sideshow!

Strange 80s is a one-of-a-kind fundraising event, uniting musicians & music industry vets to help children grow mental muscle in the wake of disrupted schooling, lockdowns & suspended extracurriculars.

Matthew Leone, founder of Charity Bomb

Not familiar with the name? If you google, “Who is the emos not dead guy?” you’ll have the answer. To save you time, it’s Emo’s Not Dead founder Matt Cutshall! Yep, he also releases his own music! The music video for ‘blink-182’ may make it seem like only a parody, but the song is actually really good. We can’t wait to see him live!

Sum 41 — ‘Fat Lip’

Let’s be real. Sum 41 has so many iconic songs. But there’s just something extra special about this one. As soon as you hear the intro, you know you’re about to go hard, whether it be at your local Emo Night or even just by yourself. We recommend taking some Ibuprofen beforehand since most of us aren’t as young as we used to be.

Bowling For Soup — ‘1985’

No matter how old you are, you probably listened to this song growing up. We loved it then, and we still do. The only difference now is you can probably relate to Debbie on some kind of level. Whether kids think you’re uncool or you just stick to your preferred era. We feel you, Debbie.

Plain White T’s — ‘Our Time Now’

Don’t get us wrong. We absolutely love, ‘Hey There Delilah,’ but ‘Our Time Now’ is such a high-energy song. It’s also universally nostalgic. Maybe you had this song on your Myspace profile. Or, if you’re on the younger side, maybe you heard this song on iCarly. Regardless, it’s a banger.

Now For The 80s Music…

So, not only are we getting to see Sum 41, Bowling For Soup, Plain White T’s, and Your Broken Hero, but we’re getting Chris DeMakes and Roger Lima of Less Than Jake, Cassadee Pope, Emmyn Calliero of Games We Play, and more! We have no idea which 80s songs they’ll be covering. But in no particular order, here’s a list of our favorite iconic 80s songs we think would be ~radical~ to hear live.

  1. ‘Take on Me’ — a-ha
  2. ‘Let’s Dance’ — David Bowie
  3. ‘Under Pressure’ – Queen
  4. ‘Africa’ — TOTO
  5. ‘Smooth Criminal’ — Michael Jackson
  6. ‘Like A Virgin’ — Madonna
  7. ‘Jessie’s Girl’ — Bruce Springsteen
  8. ‘Don’t You (Forget) About Me’ — Simple Minds
  9. ‘How Soon Is Now’ — The Smiths
  10. ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ — Joy Division
