The Boyz are making their third comeback of the year, and it’s another one you really shouldn’t miss out on!
As the second installment of their three-part second full-length album, Phantasy, The Boyz are back with Sixth Sense. After displaying a bright, summery, and joyful sound in Christmas in August with ‘LIP GLOSS,’ Sixth Sense takes a whole new direction. The Boyz can do every concept to perfection, and this is yet another genius take on a dark concept. Watch out for ‘WATCH IT,’ because you’ll get addicted to it after just one listen!
‘WATCH IT’
There’s always something special about the way The Boyz do dark concepts in their comebacks. ‘WATCH IT’ fits them to perfection. And even though The Boyz have done dark concepts before, like ‘ROAR‘ or ‘The Stealer,’ this new song is unlike any of their other title tracks. ‘WATCH IT’ brings something new and fresh to the table with its groove and crunchy bass that almost gives it a 2000s R&B-Pop feel. The dark side of it feels dangerous, mysterious, and enticing, yet subtle. The almost-talked chorus just makes it so unique and addicting. And that’s not to say that the melodies that we get aren’t also catchy. Indeed, some of the highlights in this song are the vocal moments like the bridge. This climax of the song is everything when talking about vocals: the way New’s voice opens the bridge, Sangyeon’s vocals serving the build-up beautifully, and, of course, Jacob’s insane high note.
‘WATCH IT’ is confident, bold, dark, sexy, and simply an absolute banger. The music video elevates ‘WATCH IT’ even more as The Boyz embody the song in a way only they could. The aesthetics and visuals are simply top tier, and we could never get tired of it. Add to this an insane choreography, that once again could only be pulled off by The Boyz, and you have another masterpiece to add to the list.
PHANTASY Pt.2: Sixth Sense
The Sub-Units
With the release of a second full-length album, we knew that new special sub-units were upon us – and that’s precisely what we got. In Christmas in August, we got the already iconic ‘Passion Fruit’ with Hyunjae, Younghoon, Juyeon, Q, and Sunwoo. This time around, we have two new sub-units: ‘Rat In The Trap’ with Sangyeon, Jacob, New, Kevin, and Juhaknyeon, and ‘Honey’ with Sunwoo and Eric.
You would think that with the line-up for ‘Rat In The Trap’ consisting of all these amazing vocalists, they would take the ballad route. And yet. ‘Rat In The Trap’ compliments the title track perfectly. It has similar vibes with a groovy bass and a dark energy. They use their amazing vocals in an inventive way in this dark yet energetic track. The build-up in the pre-chorus leading to a truly addictive and lowkey sassy chorus makes this song an absolute bop.
On the other hand, ‘Honey’ may keep the dark aesthetic, but contrary to the clear R&B influence in the other tracks, this one is way more hip-hop. And it makes sense when the sub-unit consists of one of our favorite rap duos. ‘Honey’ is The Boyz‘ first song entirely in English to be included in one of their official releases, and even if it wasn’t, the refrain would remain just as addictive and catchy. We can’t help but sing along to this one. There’s just something about ‘Honey’ that we can’t get out of our minds.
The OT11 B-Sides
The dark theme is explored further throughout this part of the album. ‘Bad Luck’ and ‘CRYING&LAUGHTER’ put a twist on love songs and instead portray a dark and twisted love story. With their R&B-influenced sound, both songs could fit perfectly in some previous releases, such as their Japanese full-length album, Breaking Dawn. ‘CRYING&LAUGHTER’ has some of the best rap verses in the album – and well, you know the song will be good when Sunwoo starts it off. The catchy melodies mixed with that tragic, very dark side of love work perfectly.
Finally, ‘Escape’ can be considered as the song that puts an end to the dark love cycle explored in the previous tracks. As they feel trapped, they finally set themselves free. It still has a dark energy but in a much different way. ‘Escape’ is the most slow and chill song in the album. It’s hopeful yet remains dark and obscure. It works perfectly as the closing track, and it will be, for sure, the perfect transition into the third and final installment of the Phantasy album.
