Mae Stephens Represents Neurodivergency In Mainstream Music With Her Latest Single ‘ADHD’

2023 was a pure-fire year for Mae Stephens. The British singer-songwriter blew up a year ago with her hit single ‘If We Ever Broke Up,’ which opened up a plethora of opportunities for her, including opening for the likes of BLACKPINK at BST Hyde Park, performing at Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds, collaborating with Meghan Trainor and Sanrio’s Kuromi, and has been listed on VEVO’s DSCVR as well as our very own Ones To Watch in 2024!

Now, Mae has kick-started off the year with her newest release, ‘ADHD,’ a funky yet empowering pop bop that celebrates neurodiversity while shedding a spotlight on Mae’s realities of being diagnosed with ADHD and OCD.

Speaking about the song in a press release, Mae shares: “ADHD is a really important track for me. It’s about my process of going through understanding myself, and how the word ‘disorder’ is the wrong term for it, as it’s my normality. To anyone with ADHD, you are seen, and you are loved.”

It’s no secret that there has been a surge of diagnoses with ADHD in recent years with more research and understanding of it, in particular with women and AFAB. Several of us at THP have also had this experience of where we have been late diagnosed after spending our lives lost and unsure, experiencing isolation of being “different,” and it can be a life-altering experience to finally have an answer to your continuous questions. Having a rising artist like Mae making it into the mainstream and giving ADHD a spotlight through music in a groovy upbeat pop song feels like a celebration of being yourself and self-acceptance of being unapologetically yourself, even if there are inevitable struggles.

For the longest time, ADHD has been highly misunderstood, and the more attention brought to it, especially by a celebrity, helps society understand it. More and more often than not, music does speak to people, and quite frankly, if a chart-worthy banger gets the message across, we are more than happy to be bopping around the place, belting out the chorus!
