(G)I-DLE’s releases are always extra special to us. We always know we’ll get songs to play on a loop for hours. So, of course, we were even more excited for the release of their second full-length album, 2, with ‘Super Lady’ as a title track. And it is exactly what we needed. (G)I-DLE made us love them even more and feel empowered in the process. That’s when you know the music is good and impactful.
‘Wife’
Before the release of the entire album, (G)I-DLE released the pre-release track: ‘Wife.’ Nothing can prepare you for how addictive this song is and how much it’ll get stuck in your head. It might seem like a fun, silly song, but ‘Wife’ makes fun of the traditional gender roles where women are considered useful only when they are married and take care of their husbands. You can also find numerous innuendos in the song that mock the hyper-sexualization of women and the male gaze. With this release alone, we knew that (G)I-DLE were not holding back at all with this comeback. And that’s one of the many things we love about them.
‘Super Lady’
Right from the start, we knew ‘Super Lady’ was going to have us in a chokehold. The song starts off with Soyeon’s powerful and striking vocals, like you’ve never heard her before. Mixing military drums, chants, and instructions with EDM and a strong bass makes way for the perfect banger. ‘Super Lady’ is all about empowering women and bringing them together, through a dark-sounding yet fun and addictive song. (G)I-DLE also included fun easter eggs in their lyrics referencing other K-Pop girl groups’ hits, conveying that it’s about empowering all women and not about competing against each other.
Some of our favorite moments in the song go to the intro, the pre-chorus with Miyeon and Yuqi absolutely eating those vocals, and, of course, just how much the song explodes with the dance break and the outro. We could also just say everything about this song is perfect. And the music video embodies the vibe incredibly well with killer choreography, gorgeous visuals, mind-blowing outfits and aesthetics, and an energy that is made only to empower us. ‘Super Lady’ goes hard and (G)I-DLE absolutely slayed.
The Second Full-Length Album: 2
A full-length album means more b-sides, which also means more happiness for us. And (G)I-DLE did not disappoint us with these new songs. 2 does not have a single skip. With tracks written and produced by the members, every single song in this album is special and unique.
‘Revenge’
Soyeon‘s track, ‘Revenge,’ keeps the dark atmosphere of the title track (also written and produced by her) with a pop-rock sound mixed with pop and other influences. The vocals in this song hit so hard, and this first b-side has some of our favorite lyrical moments in the album. The only word that can truly define this song is: badass. ‘Revenge’ absolutely slaps.
‘Doll’
One of the songs written by Yuqi is ‘Doll.’ This track is all about breaking away from a toxic person who tries to control you, and it does so in a magical way. The production in this track is perfect as it creates a dark atmosphere and reminisces on the music you could relate to dolls, puppets, and the circus. It’s another way to empower us.
‘Vision’
‘Vision’ shifts the energy in 2. This track is more lowkey, more vibey. Written by Minnie and Miyeon, the minimalistic production and the R&B energy of the track bring something truly special to the album. This track is all about ambition, and ‘Vision’ sums it up pretty well in its own lyrics when it says: “Follow your desire.”
‘7Days’
Another track written by Minnie is, of course, ‘7Days.’ This all-English track is a sweet pop song that explores what it’s like to fall in love with someone, to love them so much it feels like an obsession. And let’s just say we’ll be playing this one every day of the week as well.
‘Fate’
‘Fate’ is unlike any of the songs in 2. This song written by Soyeon sounds fun and bright, yet there’s a big contrast with the lyrics. ‘Fate’ is all about going through everyday routine even though there’s pain and nostalgia in you that can bring you down. This song is about trying to find a bright side and push forward even with the pain.
‘Rollie’
Finally, the second track written by Yuqi in (G)I-DLE‘s second full-length album is ‘Rollie.’ We do really love it when (G)I-DLE go all in with their hip-hop tracks, and this is one of those instances. The vibes in ‘Rollie’ are immaculate and unique as they focus on the genre and flex their success and status.
‘Super Lady’ and 2 are yet another statement of (G)I-DLE’s musical genius and power as a group. It’s another instance of women taking their platform to empower other women and create a strong feeling of unity. (G)I-DLE truly became super ladies with this release.
