Savanna Leigh Had Us ‘hanging on a dream’ In Chicago

Looking for a new indie classic? Allow us to put Savanna Leigh on your radar. A singer-songwriter from Nashville, Savanna is a rare gem. Her lyricism and storytelling are jaw-dropping and captivating; with just her voice and her guitar, she can connect with a room full of people from all different walks of life, making them feel as though they’re all connected. We were lucky enough to catch Savanna Leigh at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago, Illinois, and we can call it nothing but a dream!

Savanna started the set with her song, ‘hanging on a dream,’ which she described as a song all about chasing your dreams no matter what. She’d pre-warned the crowd her show was going to be “a little sad,” but she balanced it out well with her inviting and bubbly personality. It practically radiated from the stage. Serenading us with cool breathy tones, ‘hanging an a dream’ was definitely… a dream.

These years don’t feel like the best times. Why does it feel like I’m behind? Can’t feel the ground underneath your feet if you’re hanging on a dream.

Savanna played other somber songs like ‘i miss you (i still do),’ which is all about a lover who quickly becomes a stranger (haven’t we lived that story a time or two before?) She also tugged on our heartstrings with ‘somewhere in between,’ a tale of realizing a relationship isn’t really meant to be and it’s time to let go.

In this incredibly intimate set, we also got to hear a few unreleased songs. Savanna introduced us to the track, ‘indigo’ which she described as “being the only person trying to keep a relationship together and wondering if the other person notices it’s falling apart.” We love a little heartbreak (when it’s in song form,) and it was a nice treat to hear what we could hear coming next from Savanna.

Coincidentally, Savanna’s favorite was also our favorite! Her track, ‘locked in july,’ is that one song that will make you feel (without sounding too cliche) warm and fuzzy inside no matter how many times you hear it. Makes sense, though, since Savanna wrote the song while she was back in Tampa, Florida, visiting home. Somehow, she managed to capture that Florida sunshine and inject it right into this one, providing easy listening again and again!

Now I know why people say the right place at the wrong time. Wish we could’ve locked ourselves in July.

Savanna showed off her amazing stage presence from beginning to end; it never wavered and even amplified as she corraled the entire room together for her rendition of ‘Stick Season’ by Noah Kahan. Truly doing the original justice, it was a chilling feeling (in the best way possible) to hear the entire room come together to sing the lyrics at the top of their lungs. Literal goosebumps!

Savanna tied a beautiful ribbon at the end of the night by playing her most recent single, ‘like i used to.’ A true testament to her songwriting abilities (and a beautiful glimpse into girlhood,) ‘like i used to’ is for all of us holding on to, or mourning, previous versions of ourselves while learning to love the new us.

Savanna Leigh is a powerful force pushing her way through the crowd and, if you ask us, deserves to shine. Raw and relatable, she has a style and a voice all her own but still manages to be the voice for all of us going through relationship issues or self-doubt.
