The Driver Era Releases ‘Get Off My Phone’ A Doom Scroll Of Heartache

The groovy and funky pop brother duo, The Driver Era, released another tune that is refreshing to our ears. ‘Get Off My Phone’ is stylistically different from their ‘Rumors’ released last year. The new track tells a different story of heartache that opposes the ‘Rumors’ narrative. Also, ‘Get Off My Phone’ sonically takes us in on a ride! There are undeniable traces of distorted 80s-90s pop-rock meets electronic rock!

Rumors‘ takes a listener on a path of a track influenced by 80s pop hidden within the rhythm. Think along the lines of ‘Take On Me’ by A-ha influencing The Driver Era. Keeping that in mind, the new era, The Driver Era, will be fun and influenced grooves from the 80s and 90s that are resurfacing in the modern pop-rock world!

‘Get Off My Phone’ Is A Heartbreak Moment That Lives Through Traces Online

Ross and Rocky Lynch have created a song that focuses on removing traces of the relationship away, opposite from the ‘Rumors‘ upbeat message of being so into someone.

“Moved out of the Hollywood Hills / Where we fell in love damn, I feel it still”

‘Get Off My Phone’ – The Driver Era

Light guitar strums during the verses reflect the “I’m totally ok” mantra we tend to tell ourselves when moving on from someone. Meanwhile, a megaphone mic in the chorus amplifies the genuine pent-up emotion. This emotion is one of annoyance at being so close to feeling free and then slipping back into the spiral that we all get so eager to leave behind.

Yes, the protagonist is hurting. The lyricism in the verses creates a moment where they try to convince themselves that they are fine. It’s like they are putting the spotlight on themselves in front of an invisible audience that they are, without a doubt, fine! Essentially, fake it till you make it. Until a photo appears on social media of the ex, jolting the grief to return.

‘Get Off My Phone’ Is A Testament To 21st Century Dating

Certainly, throughout the song, there are undertones of love that still exist. It’s no longer romantic love, however. It’s bittersweet. The protagonist takes you into a point of view of appreciation for what was dealt with, both the highs and the lows. ‘Get Off My Phone’ is a match that lights the fire of how good it can feel to shake off an ex, regardless of how long you’ve been together while also giving space to recognize that the fire is burning away memories laced in each token, turning to ash.

The perfume no longer lingers in the sheets. Records once playing music you and a partner danced to were given away. Clothes donated. Notes thrown away. It’s the same story many listeners have experiences just like the protagonist. You can get rid of all the physical things! Yet, in reality, people can still pop back up with the digital age. Or, you can easily look them up.

Doom scroll, I hit a pot hole / It keeps my heart broke, oh

‘Get Off My Phone’ – The Driver Era

The confusion and spiral that comes from trying to either connect with an ex or not (sometimes dear friend, it’s not worth it) is heavily heard in the chorus. It’s a cue for the protagonist and the listener to agree that the doom scroll has to end. The “nice” text to check in because you’re a good person has to stop. It’s not easy to remove a person, but sometimes, not knowing is for the best.

It gets pretty annoying when your phone keeps trying to show you happy memories of a past relationship.
