Jack & Jack Return With Home, A True Sophmore Album Filled With Heart And Hope

Get out from under that rock you are living under because Jack & Jack are back! The two boys dropped a brand new album with 12 songs filled with coming-of-age stories, heartbreak, and irresistible beat drops. This body of work has been highly anticipated since 2019, and we can surely say both Jacks delivered on their promise! The songs on Home both represent a new Jack Gilinsky and Jack Johnson, while also giving remembrance to the Jacks many of us grew up with on hits like ‘Groove’ and ‘Tides.’ We’re here to go through each song on Home, and the ones we are most excited to hear on tour. Yes, we said TOUR!

‘Thought I Was Dead’

We are certainly glad Jack & Jack are not dead…in fact, they are as alive as ever, especially with this track set to open the album. Fans set the bar high for a good opening to the album, and I think we can say we were not disappointed. ‘Thought I Was Dead’ gives life to the intrusive thoughts we all have in our heads sometimes. Who are our real friends? Who will stick around when I fail or succeed?

“All this time they thought I was dead/Wouldn’t you think that somebody would’ve cried? All these thoughts left better unsaid/Left unsaid they’ll eat you alive/Oh my God, they thought I was dead/Oh my God, oh my God/Story told this all in my head”

A unique moment in the song comes when Jack Gilinsky (known as “G” by fans and friends) sings in Spanish, something we haven’t really seen him do before. This lyrical experiment lands nicely, but we do wish there were a few more Spanish moments in the song in order to tie the song into a perfect bow by the end.

‘Control’

The album moves forth from the opening track to give us ‘Control.’ I mean when we first heard about Home’s announcement, we lost our ‘Control,’ but have since gained it back… a little. The themes in Home start to become more and more clear. As the boys have grown older, with their audience as well, they’ve put more emphasis on having control over important things in their lives. One of the most important being the control of their music. Home comes as their first independent album, after five years of being signed to a major label. This track is the perfect mellow beat to ease into the rest of the songs, and we love the way that G’s voice seamlessly flows with the melodies.

“No, control ovеr my mind and my soul/I gotta get that sh** back/You got my back against the ropes/Was mе and you against the world/But now my world’s up in smoke’/And baby worst of all/That’s when shit got personal/I said some things I can’t take back/And yeah I know that”

‘Stuttering’

You know it, you love it, you’ve streamed it a million times, it’s ‘Stuttering.’ A major Jack & Jack fan favorite, ‘Stuttering’ has over one million streams on Spotify and is a hard song not to sing along to. The pop track is super catchy so it’ll be an easy one for new fans to quickly fall in love with, and learn every lyric, before tour starts. Here at THP, we fall for flirty records every time. Especially when it’s coming from Jack & Jack. ‘Stuttering’ is flirtatious and so fun to sing at the top of our lungs. We can’t wait to scream “Johnson! Johnson!” in a giant mosh pit on tour with the rest of the fandom.

“My homies around me, they chantin’ me on like/”Johnson, Johnson”/That’s when I almost lost it/I locked eyes with a girl from across the room/Then I spit out my drink like a faucet/”Yo, guys, check it out, watch this”/And with the confidence of Ryan Gosling/Walk up to her face without any hesitation/And say, “Wa-wanna chill? Or dance? Or something?”

If there’s a boy group that can mix rap and pop into a genre that is unique to them, it’s Jack & Jack. ‘Stuttering’ along with a number of other tracks on Home seem to prove this point over and over again. We’ll definitely want to see this one on tour, and perhaps maybe as the opening number? A girl can dream…

‘Paranoid’

Johnson shows his talent on the third track of Home. It opens with bar after bar and seamlessly slides into G’s dreamy, yet raw vocals. ‘Paranoid’ is one of the tracks on the album that showcases both the boy’s growth of talent. We are eager to see how the boys transform this song onstage! To say we are proud of them is an understatement. If you’ve been here since 2014, raise your hand! 🖐️

“The green grass a little greener on this side/The birds trippin’, singing sides on the hillside/Does everyone feel that beauty inside of me?”

Did we forget to mention that the one and only Sammy Wilk is featured on this song!? As the title of the album implies, even the features and producers on this record have been with the boys since the beginning and create that full feeling of Home.

‘Bonnie & I’

When artists create fictional stories in their songs it makes an even more immersive experience for listeners. ‘Bonnie & I’ is a twist on the classic story of Bonnie and Clyde, but with a little Jack flair. The melodies are a bit eerie and give into the story in the most beautiful way. We know that Johnson had a lot of fun hitting the recording studio with this track, probably just as much fun as it is to listen to it. The backing melodies and production remind us of Circles by Post Malone, one of our favorite songs from 2019. To think that Jack & Jack were inspired by Post to create this record puts a huge smile on our faces! On tour, we hope the boys sing this song and we hope to see some fun visuals alongside it.

“We on the run baby/Hey/I’m on the run with the one I love/And trouble seems to follow us wherever we go/Robbed a bank in Southern California/Caught a train and hit the east coast”

‘Scared Of Love’

Upon a first listen, we knew this track would be a clear standout amongst long-term fans. The lyrics give light to a true love story and we can see Jack G sitting at the piano serenading those he loves most (us). For one of the first times, we hear Johnson stepping away from a true rap to sing alongside G. We adore this new version of Johnson and hope that he pulls out the vocals onstage! The song is about finding someone who you really connect with, so much so that love doesn’t feel scary anymore. ‘Scared of Love’ is the perfect way to hit the middle of the album and get listeners excited for what’s still left to come.

“So take my hand/Let’s have this dance/While we’re still young/Ever since I met you girl I’m not so scared of love”

‘What Happened’

If Jack & Jack were in a studio with Michael Jackson’s producers, it would give you ‘What Happened.’ We are so pleased with this record! It’s exciting, new, and fresh for the boys and definitely fresh for us. It’s quickly taken one of our top favorite tracks to jam out to in the car, in our rooms, and definitely on tour. This track doesn’t need much of an explanation because it is practically perfection.

“You Rickrolled my love/You led my heart astray/But I guess it doesn’t matter anyway/You wasted my time/And now my heart, it breaks/It breaks, it breaks, breaks”

‘Like That’ (Jack’s Version)

Out of the blue, Jack & Jack re-released ‘Like That’ and transported us back to 2014! For long-time fans, this surprise was super special and we’ve had it on replay since it dropped. It fits perfectly in the body of work that is Home as it represents the OG fans and the home that Jack G and Jack J have found with us over the past ten years. We also appreciate the subtle lyric changes to reflect the trends and musicians of today, such as the switch from Miley Cyrus to Meg Thee Stallion. This is sure to be a hit onstage and an easy crowd-pleaser. If you didn’t have the chance to hear ‘Like That’ years ago when you begged your parents for tickets, now is your chance! Big girl money coming in clutch!

“Girl, I see you working, like Meg Thee Stallion be twerking/I’m certain you’ll be screaming for me when I close the curtains/But it’s funny, ’cause I’m the one screaming out for you, baby/I’ve been messin’ around with too many girls, I need a lady/Hoping you can be the one, but you need to show it/And if you prove it to me, all this money, girl, we’ll blow it”

‘Ecstasy’

Another banger right from the first few seconds, ‘Ecstasy’ is that girl on the album. Jack J continues to bring a soulful singing voice and step away from the rapping, which we commend him for and definitely hope to hear more from in the future. This track is all about locking eyes with that one person that makes you feel like you can fly. Electricity runs through your veins, and you make an impulsive decision, but it turns out to be an incredible outcome. Don’t try to hide those feelings, Jack & Jack sing to us, and never let go. We certainly are never letting go of this track! It’s one of our favorites!

“Baby I feel something real/Don’t try to fight it/Hands around your body/Never letting go/’Cause feel like tonight might get the best of me/Why do I feel so alive/Whenever you’re next to me?”

‘French Love Story’

We are reaching the end of the album but have an amazing three songs left to go! ‘French Love Story’ is exactly what it sounds like. Perhaps another fictional story (or not), Jack and Jack have found love in France and even sing to us in French. Who knew that we would be getting both Spanish and French lyrics in this album!? We love how this song brings out the goofiness of the boys that we all know and love. Each lyric is perfection and after listening, we are ready for our very own romance in Paris, France.

“I used to know they ain’t loyal/I used to love a girl named Stacy/One day that love turned cold/Turns out neither one was worth saving/I want that “Je te veux” even when the skies ain’t blue/I want that hold me down/Go that extra mile/I’ll take anything for you”

‘September’s Gone’

Taking the number one spot on our favorites list is ‘September’s Gone.’ This song had an immediate chokehold on us when we first heard it and we had to press replay multiple times. Out of all the songs Jack and Jack have released, this one holds a special place in our hearts and we know it does for you too. Even though we love to get up and dance, fans also love hearing the boys slow things down and get raw with their lyrics.

“So wake me up when September ends/I miss my baby, I miss my friends/Temptations calling only been a week/Hoping that I wake up and you’ll be right next to me, /I think I’m falling in a deep abyss”

On tour, we hope the boys use this song as an opportunity to sit down and get close and personal with us. The moment calls for a sit-down performance with true vocals backing it up.

‘Home’

Giving title to the name of the album, ‘Home’ takes us back to Omaha, Nebraska. If you’ve been here since the Calibraska days, then you’ll love this song and its special meaning. Growing up is inevitable and sometimes it is met with pain. Leaving the place you call home for a while and then returning, can be challenging. Streets change, people change, and families change. The people we once loved may have moved on, and we must follow suit. Jack & Jack flawlessly capture these intense feelings in ‘Home’ and leave us with the important message that “home is where the heart is” and that finding your way home is only a few steps away….

“Home is where the heart is baby/But lately mine’s been feeling vacant/I’m only getting older, city’s getting colder/All these empty roads end pavements don’t look the same/I’m covered in rain through my window pane, da*n”

What a perfect way to close the album and tie each song back into the meaning and themes of Home. Our home is with Jack & Jack on the stage, in the music, and with each other. ❤️
