It’s no secret that Ariana Grande’s new album eternal sunshine (slightly deluxe) is a work of art we’re going to be talking about until we’re blue in the face. But it also makes sense how we’re finding every way we can to tie it to other things we love. And just like Ariana Grande, we also love the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. There was a clear line of inspiration that Ariana used from this movie throughout this record. And even though it’s so much more than a parallel to an iconic film, we kind of need to talk about those parallels a little more! So naturally we found the perfect Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind quote to go with your favorite track off of eternal sunshine (slightly deluxe) to celebrate its release!
‘eternal sunshine’
The title track of the album, and so rightfully so. ‘eternal sunshine’ is absolutely magnetic and probably one of our most played tracks on the record. Falling out of love with someone is a kind of pain you don’t know how to prepare for until you’re in it. And sometimes it hurts so bad that you wish you just completely erase that person from your mind. Kind of like the entire plot of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (see what we did there?). And we think this quote from one of the main characters Joel sums that all up pretty well!
“Look at it out here, it’s all falling apart. I’m erasing you and I’m happy!”
‘don’t wanna break up again’
Sometimes we stay in a relationship way longer than we should have. There are a lot of reasons why it happens, but sometimes it’s just because you simply aren’t ready to let go of what once was. But the constant emotional and mental tug-of-war that the process comes with is absolutely draining.
“My embarrassing admission is, I really like that you’re nice right now. I mean, I can’t tell from one moment to the next what I’m gonna like, but right now. — I’m glad you are.”
‘we can’t be friends (wait for your love)’
This track has been on repeat since the original version of eternal sunshine was released. We’ve been obsessed with the music video, and Ariana’s vocals on this one are everything to us. If we’re being honest, we would also wait forever for Ariana’s love.
“Joel: Just wait. Just wait.
Clementine: What do you want, Joel?
Joel: I don’t know. I want you to wait for… just a while.”
‘imperfect for you’
Sometimes our imperfections are things we can’t seem to look past. And we can be the ones to blow up our entire relationship because of that. There’s power in owning it though, and Ariana does this so beautifully on ‘imperfect for you.’ Even with your flaws and the tolls they take on you, there’s so much love you can still give. It’s fighting the fear that’s the hardest part.
“Joel Barish: I can’t see anything I don’t like about you.
Clementine: But you will, you will think of things and I’ll get bored with you and feel trapped because that’s what happens with me.”
