“Writing this song felt so powerful because it was putting my story into words. I didn’t realize that my story was millions of people’s stories. But when the algorithm said ‘okay time to be viral,’ the comments I would get often were, ‘’I hate that we can all relate to this.’ The song became more than about weight, it was about peoples queerness, and gender and race. It boiled down to the fact that we would have never known we were different, until we were showed by others. Watching all of these videos, compiling the stories of all of these people, was an honor. It’s an honor to be an ‘us’ with them.”

Here at The Honey POP we’re all for an exclusive so we got to chat with Kate to dive deeper into her new video and the song itself!
Can you tell us more about the concept of the video and where the idea came from?
When we went to the drawing board for this video, we thought about how when it went insanely viral, something that was so beautiful was, everyone in the comments sharing THEIR stories. All of the sudden this song became so much bigger than I ever imagined it. Going through HUNDREDS of videos of people using the song to tell their stories got me all teary eyed. This song isn’t just about my story, it’s about how we became an “us”
How does it feel knowing that so many people from around the world resonate with your music and the message you’re spreading?
Imagine if I was like…terrible! I hate relating! (THIS IS A JOKE) That answer would be cuckoo bananas because I truly am speechless. Here is the thing– this is one of my WILDEST dreams. People are listening to the music, sharing their stories, and being a part of this thing! I am so honored.
Any artist who gets the amount of positive feedback you’ve had also undoubtedly receives negative comments and criticism. How do you deal with that?
I’ve been dealing with it in a handful of ways. I am a cheeky lil guy, so a lot of the times, I respond with clap backs. One guy told me he’d venmo me to never see me on his for you page again…so I made a video, saying bet…i’ll block you if you venmo me…here is my handle. Update: he never venmoed HAHA But a lot of sweet fans sent money saying F*** that guy lol
Your music and lyrics are so personal and from the heart, do you view making music as a form of therapy?
I view therapy as therapy and a lot of the times what I work through in sessions becomes a part of my music in a big way. I am a big therapy girly. I LOVE IT. Love my therapist. she’s the best. shout out. hot girls go to therapy, I think it should be accessible to all.
