Did we ever think we’d be celebrating a song called ‘Groin?'” No. But we’re here now! And while we’re here, Namjoon has been in London! As part of the marvel that is his newest album, Right Place, Wrong Person, RM has released a music video for ‘Groin,’ which sees him roaming the streets of London!
It got us thinking, though… London is home to some of the best artists in music – past, present, and future! – so there are probably quite a lot of music videos that were filmed in the city, too! Some of these we already associated with London, but after we went digging around on the internet, we found way more, too! From Bob Dylan to The Beatles to Amy Winehouse, so many of music’s greatest names have picked London to set the scene for their songs!
‘Groin’ By RM
Remember how cool the ‘Sexy Nukim’ music video was? Well, the same director – Pennacky – worked on this one! ‘Groin’ is one of the more aggressive, unpolished tracks on Right Place, Wrong Person, and RM strutting around the back alleys of London only adds to this vibe. Pennacky has worked with other disruptive artists like Atarashii Gakko!, so the naturally unruly energy of this music video is just perfect – for both ‘Groin’ and this era of RM!
‘As It Was’ By Harry Styles
“You know it’s not the same as it was,” and we’ve never been able to look at London Barbican the same since Harry filmed the ‘As It Was’ music video there! When most people visit, they tend to see the conservatory, watch a show, or pop into an exhibition. But if Harry would rather dance around in his red leotard, that works, too!
‘London Bridge’ By Fergie
You’d think the clue was in the name of this one, but actually, it’s not! The music video for Fergie’s ‘London Bridge’ was set in Woolwich. Which is, indeed, in London, but honestly nowhere near the song’s subject!
‘Secret Love Song’ By Little Mix
This is one of Little Mix’s most beloved songs, and we reckon the music video has something to do with that! Cold, wintery scenes of the girls walking across Tower Bridge and London Bridge (actual London Bridge this time) really add to the emotion of the track and music video.
‘Vossi Bop’ By Stormzy
We had to include the King of London in this list, didn’t we? Stormzy filmed the ‘Vossi Bop’ music video at several different iconic London landmarks, including the Bank of England and Westminster Bridge. Plus, Stormzy is a London icon himself, as is Idris Elba (Taylor Swift’s ‘London Boy,’ anyone?) who also makes an appearance here!
‘SOLO’ By Jennie
We’re having this one, ok? Jennie’s solo debut was filmed in Hayes, which technically counts as (very) West London! To commemorate the song’s success and its London roots, Jennie even brought it back to the setlist for BLACKPINK’s show at British Summertime Hyde Park in 2023!
‘Wannabe’ By Spice Girls
An iconic music video by one of the most iconic girl groups ever! Spice Girls’ ‘Wannabe’ was filmed in the Midland Grand Hotel in North London (now known as St Pancras Renaissance Hotel). Who’s up for a girl’s trip to recreate the video? Which Spice Girl would you ‘Wannabe?’ (sorry).
‘Midnight Memories’ By One Direction
From one London 2012 Olympics performer to another! One Direction actually had a few music videos set in London (hello? ‘One Thing?’), but we had to add ‘Midnight Memories’ to our list. The title track from their third album sees them wreak havoc on the city, and we still can’t get enough of it.
‘Hung Up’ By Madonna
This is maybe one of the most exciting music video locations on our list! Madonna’s iconic ‘Hung Up’ was filmed at an abandoned underground station near Charing Cross, as well as on a Jubilee line train between Charing Cross and West Hampstead!
‘Blow Your Mind’ By Dua Lipa
Last but not least, we have an early Dua Lipa track! Just like ‘As It Was,’ ‘Blow Your Mind’ was set in London’s iconic Barbican. It’s a place that has creativity deeply embedded in it, so it makes sense that two of pop music’s biggest names would have their sights set on it!
So there you have it! Ten London-based music videos that blew our minds (sorry, Dua). We honestly can’t emphasize enough just how often London pops up in your faves music videos – we haven’t even had a chance to mention The Verve, The Who, Britney Spears, Olly Murs, Blur, G-Dragon, Radiohead, Skepta, Florence + The Machine, and countless, countless more!
Plus, maybe, with two more music videos still to come from RM, we’ll have more to add to this list very shortly! We’re keeping our eyes peeled…
