When you think of ATEEZ, you probably first think of their stage presence, right? Then maybe their intricate choreographies, or the high notes that main vocal Jongho loves to serve. One of the many things we love about ATEEZ, though, is the distinctive, honey-rich vocals we get from Kang Yeosang. He’s an incredibly underrated vocalist, but how he transforms ATEEZ’s songs, and often stops them in their proverbial tracks, with his delivery, needs some appreciation!
Luckily, the resident ATINYs here at The Honey POP are more than happy to offer Yeosang that appreciation. His vocal diversity, from soft whispers to his low, commanding tone, is not something to overlook either. Especially in recent comebacks, Yeosang has really blossomed as a vocalist, and we’ve loved seeing it every step of the way. We could talk about him in every ATEEZ track, TBH, but for now, here are five of the songs we think showcase Yeosang’s vocals the best.
‘IT’s You’
It’s an obvious choice to start us off, but that doesn’t make it any less valid. When ATEEZ revealed their unit tracklists, one of the things we were most excited about was hearing some more from the vocalists who don’t tend to have big parts. ‘IT’s You’ delivered in every way, shape, and form. It’s an absolutely perfect track, not least because of Yeosang’s constant switch-up of vocal style (and his sassy shoulders).
‘HALAZIA’
Do you ever still chuckle to yourself about how ‘HALAZIA’ was just meant to be a single to bridge the gap between ‘Guerrilla’ and ‘BOUNCY,’ and ended up becoming one of ATEEZ’s most loved title tracks? Because same. And what’s more, ‘HALAZIA’ wouldn’t be half the anthem than it is without Yeosang’s pre-chorus. It’s maybe the deepest vocal tone we’ve ever heard from him, and we couldn’t love it more if we tried.
‘INCEPTION’
Yeosang opens ‘INCEPTION’ with the lyric, “I’m in love,” which is pretty much how we feel about his vocals here, TBH. His husky tone against the EDM production is so important for the track’s balance. His verse is stunning, and how he does it immediately after a dance break, and whilst doing those kicks, we will never understand.
‘Paradigm’
We heard Yeosang whisper “Someone calls my name, wake me up,” and decided we would never be normal again. ‘Paradigm’ is a chronically underrated ATEEZ track, and we are willing to be its champion. The build-up of Jongho belting the pre-chorus, only for Yeosang to halt everything in its tracks as he whispers “Let me say that one more time,” floors us every time. He’s right! Let him say it again! You also get to see great vocal diversity from Yeosang in this one, with the breathy lisped whispers contrasting with his much brighter tone in the bridge.
‘WORK’
Last but not least, is the latest addition to this list! Similar to how ATEEZ uses him in ‘Paradigm,’ Yeosang provides the perfect anti-drop in ‘WORK,’ too. The group is known for their boisterous production, and a lot of that comes from how they use their vocalists! Just when you think you know where the song is going, here comes Yeosang’s “No, no, no, no, no,” to side-swipe you. We also love (and we mean, L-O-V-E, love) how you can see Yeosang grow into his own vocal style in more recent comebacks. He really embraces his rich, deep tone (and adorable lisp), and it pays off!
We also have to give honorable mentions to Yeosang’s pre-chorus in ‘Deja Vu,’ the bridge in ‘Better,’ the intro to ‘ILLUSION,’ and his verse in ‘Letter.’ Yes, this article could’ve been quadruple the size; we truly could talk about Yeosang all day. But wouldn’t that time be better spent listening to his gorgeous vocals yourself?
Which ATEEZ track features your favorite vocal moment from Yeosang? Anything that we criminally left off this list? Let us know by tweeting us at @TheHoneyPOP, or visiting us on Facebook and Instagram.
