When our favorite artists cover their favorite songs from their favorite artists (that’s a tongue twister), we get a little giddy. One artist who aces all of their covers? That would be Ruel. He is known for some amazing covers, our favorites being ‘Sparks’ by Coldplay and ‘BLEED’ by The Kid LAROI. Ruel must have heard our prayers for more covers because he just dropped an EP of 5 new covers from artists like Miley Cyrus and The Weekend.
When the idea of an EP floated around, I immediately made a playlist of hundreds of songs that were either underrated gems or my fav hits and then paired up with [producer] M-Phazes to bring them to life.
Ruel stated in a press release.

‘Hollywood’ by Tobias Jesso Jr.
What a great way to open the EP! There is so much to love about this first cover. It’s so emotional in a new way that the original didn’t give us. Ruel’s voice sounds so mature on this track, and we hope to hear a similar sound in his future solo projects! We also fell in love with the visualizer, which you can check out below.
‘Call Out My Name’ by The Weekend
When we heard that Ruel was releasing an EP of covers, we did not expect this song to be on there! Anytime someone covers songs by The Weekend, we are always curious about how they will spin it to make it their own. Ruel decided to go more slow and sultry with ‘Call Out My Name,’ which suits his singing voice really well. This cover was so entrancing we didn’t want it to end!
‘Kiss Me’ by Sixpence None the Richer
This cover actually had us in tears. The original song is undeniably gorgeous and emotional, but Ruel’s cover just did something different to us. This is the type of song that requires laying face up in the pouring rain with your lover, and those are the exact vibes we caught when listening to ‘Kiss Me’ for the first time.
‘Hide & Seek’ by Imogen Heap
Don’t worry. We also didn’t know this song before we heard the Ruel cover. But, after listening to both the cover and the original, it’s found its way onto our playlists! Ruel also mashed this cover with another cover of ‘Whatcha Say’ by Jason Derulo. Who knew these two songs (which are very different from each other) could work so perfectly as one giant mashup!?
‘Malibu’ by Miley Cyrus
This has to be one of our favorite Miley Cyrus songs! The fact that Ruel decided to cover this one really meant a lot to us. When we were listening to it, we could hear the subtle ways that Ruel made vocal changes, and we loved them all. We even could imagine Ruel and Miley teaming up on their own original song in the future. Our prayers will be answered! We’re definitely streaming this one on our next beach trip!
